Sold a 125 Fiesta St Line instead of a 140

Featured Replies

Hi there, I believe I have been sold a 125 St Line instead of the advertised 140. I purchased the car over 12 months ago now, but have only just realised that it might be missing some horses (First time buyer mistake). After checking the door card it says 125PS but the dealership are adamant that the car is a 140, and that is what the vehicle is insured as. Is there a chance the door card is incorrect or should I return the car?

Thanks in advance

Check the VIN on the vehicle build sheet

Or simply have a look at your V5 registration document. Item P2 of Vehicle Details is Max net power in kW, should be around 103 for 140ps, 125 would be around 92.

Also a 140 is lower geared than a 125, at 70 in 6th it should be on about 2675 rpm, 125 would be lower, about 2380rpm.

From what I’ve checked so far the car is a 125. Is it worth making a deal out of it and taking it back to the dealership? Like I said I’ve only now noticed over a year after purchasing the car

Lots of summaries of the legal position online, eg:

https://www.theaa.com/car-buying/legal-rights

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/105951/your-rights-when-buying-a-used-car

As I see it:

- the dealer misrepresented the car

- you have presumably paid more than you would have done if the car had been correctly described

- the car has been insured as a 140 not a 125 so you have probably paid a higher premium**.

I would check your insurance position asap as the vehicle is not as declared to your insurers.

Edit: ** the 140 was rated 2/3 groups higher than the 125.

If you've got a reliable car and been happy with the power so far, it's probably not worth the stress of chasing it up.

Though if you've got the spare capacity for some extra stress at the moment, then there should be a small amount of compensation to come out of it.

Totally your decision though, I don't think anyone else can make it.
