New Catalytic Converter 1.0 ecoboost

Featured Replies

Following on from a recent post I decided to take my car to my own garage rather than pay the diagnostic fees.

they sorted two out of the three issues however it seems that when Ford changed my wet belt they tried to seal a part of my exhaust up which has clearly failed hence the reason why my car is making a loud noise. Garage gave mephoto showing bad sealant etc. went to Ford to tell them of problem ahead of them fixing it this week. Guy looked at it and told me it needs new catalytic converter said it would be expensive but couldn’t tell me any amount. Does anyone know how much Ford would charge to do this. As they sealed and gone wrong my garage doesn’t want to change and said I should go back to Ford but I know they won’t do this for nothing!! I wonder though can I argue the £150 diagnostic fee as they must have known there was an issue as they I tried to use sealant?

Is it the flexi section blowing?  If so, that can be replaced separately with a generic part.  Ford won't do it so you'd have to go to an exhaust shop who will cut out the old one and then weld in the new one.

If you ask Ford to supply and fit a new cat for 1.0 EcoBoost it'll be well over £500.

I’m not sure what the bit is but this is the photo

Yes that's the flexi (flexible) section.  It's a fairly common point for the exhaust to leak on this engine so any exhaust garage should know what you mean if you ask them for a quote to replace it.

Ok thanks. I’m just a bit annoyed that Ford didn’t tell me there could be an issue because clearly they knew by trying to seal it

saying that the car is 10 years old so parts are bound to wear when taking engine to pieces for wet belt

I'm surprised they didn't tell you either.  That would've been a perfect upsell for them.

Yes most definitely

If you are mechanically minded and able to work under the car it's possible to replace that section yourself without any welding. The part is readily available e.g. on ebay

I recently did this on my Focus 1.0 - a slightly different part to the Fiesta but a similar procedure. I wouldn't say it was particularly easy or accessible using only axle stands and basic tools, but it can be done if you like to do things yourself or are on a tight budget.

Because they broke it and didn't want to pay?

Don't think they'd have to pay for something that was obviously on it's last legs anyway?  Fairly common to call people midway through the wetbelt job and say they need a new vac pump or injectors...
