Tourneo Custom 2017 with Wheelchair Ramp: Soundproofing

Featured Replies

Hello there,

I am a new member and have a 2017 Tourneo Custom Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle customised by AlliedMobility (bought 2nd hand).

I am looking for ways to improve the noise insulation in the back. When on the road, there's quite a lot of road/tire noise.

The ramp for the wheelchair is afaik inserted as a basin into place after cutting out the floor. At the end of the ramp, a hinge for the ramp is attached and the bumper is cut so that the ramp can fold down. So the loop where the boot latch attaches to is on the hinge/ramp mechanism.

There are obviously gaps around the ramp hinge mechanism. I did put insulating material to close those gaps but i feel that i am missing a trick. Has anybody tried to add insulation material to the ramp basin or around the wheel wells?

It would be great to know if anyone has tried to achieve the same and if you have any tips or feedback on the outcome of what you did?

Thanks so much,

cheers,

Norberto

Hello! Im interested if you ever improved your noise? I have just bought a second hand 2018 independence yesterday and allready finding it very loud and also the ramp seems to rattle a lot. I also have a double honk when I lock it, which is incredibly annoying!

Hi there.

I never got around to insulate better, I felt that it would be a lot of work combined with not knowing if it would do anything. I gave up as ours seems based off the trader's van rather than people carrier, and we would not get that much out of it.

In my case, the double-honk happens to me if I any of the doors is left open when locking, and it won't lock.

These are some changes that I made that are not obligatorily related to sound proofing:

  1. the swinging ramp in ours was missing the rubber sheet underneath, so that when the ramp is upright/closed, the rubber covers from underneath and provides some insulation. I should have gotten fortified rubber though.

  2. not related to the sound, but our van did not have Floor Lashing Rings/Load rings on the right and left side of the ramp. I bought some off ebay. I still have 2 of them and would be happy to ship them to you if you pay for shipping costs.

  3. our alarm would go off at random times. It was caused by an issue in the bonnet's latch sensor. I ended up just shorting it with a wire.

  4. Put some grip tape on the ramp, to give the wheelchair extra grip when climbing the ramp if the tyres are wet or dirty.
