Mk2 1.8 duratec 2007 over-revving

Featured Replies

When I’m on the move and have just come to a stop, the engine revs up considerably for a few seconds then dies down to normal. The throttle operates electronically, otherwise I’d suspect a sticking throttle cable. It’s only started recently with about 120k on the clock. The fuel consumption seems worse too (not that it was ever good). Any ideas?

You could need the throttle body cleaning, it could be sticking

I checked that possibility, the butterfly showed no signs of being sticky but I used carb cleaner anyway, made no difference.

You need to clean the inside too, that you can't see

My wife's old 1.8 MK2.5 Focus suffered from rev hanging, until the PCV valve and hose were replaced.

The bad news...unless you have tiny baby hands, the inlet manifold would need to be removed to reach the valve and pipe to replace them.

I did actually remove the throttle body, DaveT70. The butterfly was clean and bright and the return spring was doing its job. All I found was a baked-on carbon film on the lower part of the throat that I couldn’t shift, but nothing gunky.

Thanks for your input, FatHead1979. Does a faulty PCV show up as a diagnostic code?

Not always mate, it didn't on my wife's car.
