Turbo Problems 1l Ecoboost

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 1L Ecoboost engine from 2016, I'm wondering if anyone can help me.

The issue seems to be that when I'm driving and I need to put my foot down to get up to speed (i.e Motorway), the turbo 'switches off'. I used to get an error message. I have since had the turbo replaced, I am still having the same issue but with no error message. turning off and starting the car again solves the issue but any knowledge on what to do next would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Lew.

I'm hearing that quite often.

Might have to bite the bullet and take the loss it seems

Hi Lew these cars can be problematic as I know well.

You've not mentioned whether any investigation work has been carried out. Do you have a basic OBD reader,  or better still Forscan to look for tell tale codes?

Hi Ray.

I had one prior to the turbo being replaced. I can't quite remember what the code was but I was told that the turbo was overboosting and then the engine went into limp mode. Then the turbo blew up due to lack of oil, which leads me to believe that the wet belt is going all over the inside of my engine...

I do not have an OBD scanner but am looking to get one soon

Whilst I can't be sure it's exactly the same issue, you may have read in this forum that I had a turbo fail through lack of oil supply. In my case I found that the in-line filter to the turbo was completely blocked.

It's annoying that the turbo was replaced without the oil supply being checked but that can't be helped now. Worryingly, your new turbo may also be suffering from lack of oil.

Unfortunately the filter in question is in an engine block oil-way and can only be accessed with the timing cover off (same work as needed to change the cambelt)

I'm guessing you haven't had the sump off to examine the oil pump strainer for blockage? I wouldn't have really expected a serious blockage on a 2016 but I wouldn't rule it out.

Depending on what DIY you can do, and the costs involved in all this work, you may need to consider cutting your losses.

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.
