Fiesta Ecoboost Timing Belt Change- which RTV

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm currently preparing to replace the timing belt on my son's 1.0 ecoboost.  I've got a tube of the following RTV gasket silicone...just wondering if it is suitable for the timing cover/sump?

Sealing Substance - 006.553 ELRING

Many thanks,

UW

My opinion would be that the silicone sealant itself would be suitable (being permanently elastic, -60 to 300 deg.C, resistant to oil etc).

I chose to use V-Tech VT-153 which has worked really well (has a higher temperature limit and bright contrasting colour - but not essential for the parts in question).

Do note that you have to be relatively quick in applying the sealant and assembling the part (starts to set as soon as it's exposed to the atmosphere - you have about 25 mins). Cumulatively there's quite a lot of area to cover, in specific areas, around lots of holes, so it's not that easy with an ordinary tube of silicone that needs to be squeezed.

Note the genuine Ford part, although more expensive, has a push type applicator making it easier to control the bead size.

Good luck!

Really appreciate the tips!  Thank you.  Might be worth picking up a second tube then so I'm not trying to squeeze the life out of it.  Can get rlring handy enough locally and at a good price.

As a reflection of OCD I'm sure, I agonised over this question when I did our belt - particularly around the fact that the two ends of the timing cover seemingly require different spec sealants! In the end I went for the genuine Ford sealant that was specified for the sump (for £25 for not very much, although I only needed around half in the end - approx 25ml) but if I was to do it again I don't think I'd be quite so fussy and would just use something more readily (and cheaply) available. I bet most garages don't use the Ford stuff, and suffer no consequences as a result.

No hint of a leak yet 😉

How are you getting on Underwurlde?

Aha! I seriously thought it was some obscure reference to me living in Wiltshire and you being in Gloucestershire... 😂

Haven't made a start on it yet.  Hope to get going this Sunday if the weather permits.

Also trying to get hold of a crank pully washer.  Local Ford dealer has let me down on that one so trying to source elsewhere.

Btw, Underwurlde is a nod to the old ZX Spectrum game from Ultimate......showing my age 🙂

I was going to suggest buying direct from Ford as I've always found their prices and delivery times to be pretty good but I see they are they're out of stock so perhaps there's a supply issue? Perhaps not surprising given the amount of belt changes that must be going on at the moment.

Ford in Ireland is supplied from the UK.  According to the parts rep, they found asbestos in their main distribution warehouse in the UK and now have to source from Germany which is taking much longer.  Anyway, was able to source one from another independent Ford parts supplier so should be good to go.
