Mk4 1.5 diesel 2018 oil/regen problem

Featured Replies

My Focus is using a litre of oil about every 1000 miles, regens roughly every 30 miles. Mpg has dropped down to 35mpg. The car runs fine and has good power and I haven’t notice any smoke!

after I have changed oil and filter and reset oil service the ford app recommends to change oil after 500 miles!

Any ideas what could be causing this!

That's very weird.  With all those regens, the oil level should be increasing, not decreasing.  It can only be leaking or burning.

I suspect it probably is burning, as oil ash will fill up the DPF quickly, which explains all the regens, and that could be masking smoke from reaching the tail pipe.

Can't think of any common oil leaks  inside this engine so I'd be checking the turbo oil seals for a leak first.

@Tomsfocus. How would I check the turbo oil seals ?

You'd need to remove the pipework to see inside the turbo.  Air intake pipe is fairly easy but DPF is more difficult.

@TomsFocus thank you.. I will investigate it further… sounds like it may be very expensive!

@TomsFocus I had a look in the inlet flow pipe coming off the turbo going towards the inlet manifold. This doesn’t have any oil in it. I am not mechanically skilled so did not attempt to take the turbo off. Would this inlet be oiled if the turbo seals have failed.

There is an oil seal each side.  So it could still be leaking into the exhaust side.  But yes, if it was leaking on the inlet side then you would see it there.

@TomsFocus

about two weeks ago the engine management light came on and the service spanner. I cleared them with my fault reader but both came back on again when car started. Also reduced power warning appeared. Booked it into Ford dealer and today was told that DPF filter is very blocked and will need replacing as normal replen doesn’t clear it sufficiently. They also checked the engine and turbo for leaks but couldn’t find any… should be done mid next week. Hopefully this will solve the issue.

Thanks for the update.  Must admit I'm a bit surprised by that.  How many miles has it done out of interest?  Coated DPFs usually last much longer than 6 years.  Very high or very low mileage could shorten that though.  Or heavy use such as towing.

@TomsFocus  it has just over 100,000 miles. Used to teach students to drive.

Ah, that does make it more likely then.  I wouldn't generally expect them to block before 10 years or 100k miles under normal use.  Obviously just on the cusp of that mileage and driving instruction will put a bit more strain on it.

There's the problem, wrong car for the job. Modern diesels (with DPF's) are designed to be used on longer journeys/motorway driving, where the DPF will be kept in working order. Short, local journeys at low speed will soon clog up the DPF.
