Steering xr5 (St)

Featured Replies

I just bought a xr5, 2007.

Guess they are called St in the rest of the world.

When driving while turning right it locks up sometimes.

Would this mean I need a new steering rack or is there anything else electronic that it could be?

the description of the issue you state is not a recognisable english phrase

what locks up - at what road speed - what condition is the car in - what mileage - what servicing - what makes you think that its happening?

if you mean it loses PAS (assistance) for a split second - check the drive belt - and change the fluid to the correct GREEN hydraulic fluid as stated in the owners manual

and buy good premium branded tyres of the size in the manual, and set the pressures as per the manual

The steering when driving at basically any speed (but OK. When stopped) seems to hit a hard spot turning to the right but can then goes OK until I am back to the same spot. Just when starting to turn right when driving.

There also appears to be a clunk from underneath but mechanic can't seem to figure it out.

Thinks both might be an internal issue in the rack.

get the wheels off the ground - check for obstructions and then see if the steering moves smoothly

if it seems odd then disconnect track rod ends and swivel the struts on their own looking for tight spot could be other factors like seized ball joints or weird strut tops

and additionally try the rack with the track rod ends off

go from there

Thanks - I will try it but only has an issue when driving, not when still... So, it's very strange

no real load (other than the weight) when stationary, when driving other forces due to cornering are affecting the car

accident damage, strange geometry, bent rack, dodgy CV joint?
