1l ecoboost timming problem

Featured Replies

Hello guys, i just bought fors focus MK3 from an auction. It came on a trailer, checked oils and etc. Started and worked just perfectly fine, drove around 4 miles, oil light started flashing, stopped, engine didnt sounded too good. Checked the oil levels, let it sit for few hours, started up and it sounds like timming belt slipped. Anyone had similar experience? Do you think engine is salvagable or may aswell break for parts? Its a shame, nearly full service history, only 92k on the clock.

Might get away with a new cambelt if it's only slipped one tooth.  But I doubt it's worth the risk and cost.  I suspect it was put into auction because the previous owner started seeing the oil light pop up.  Very common problem on this engine.

Im considering swapping the timming belt myself, but does oil pump just gets clogged up and it can be cleaned somehow or does it require new pump? I get the codes P00017 and when i deleted and restarted the car to make a video it fave me the P00016 code, i assume its cos timing slipped. Gonna drain oil and see whether there is oil shavings and if not, i think i might try my luck changing timing belt.

You'll need to buy these first...

Plus I think you'll find a guy called Ray will be along shortly to advise you accordingly 😉

Those codes can also be caused by the VCT system failing to work as it relies on high oil pressure at the top end of tye engine.

The whole oil system needs to be cleaned out, including the oil pump and VCT solenoids.  Oil pump can be cleaned successfully though there is always a risk of it not being fully clean.

Timing belt is a major job on this engine so it's entirely up to you whether you want to try it or not.

Yh im still debating, i spoke with few mechanics they all think it just jumped, will drain the oil in few days time and see whether there is metal shavings or not, would really prefer to sell whole thing as is, or break it if i would find someone needing whole front end in silver.

Very unlikely the belt has jumped teeth but is possible. You won't find metal shavings (if you do forget fixing it) but you may see belt debris.

Are you into DIY?, before anything else I would have the car on stands, drop the exhaust and sump, inspect the oil strainer for debris.

The pump strainer can be cleaned with patience. Best to unbolt the pump (easy), scrape out the worse then take plenty of time cleaning, reverse flushing with brake cleaner.

If the pump has been partially blocked there may be collateral damage but as the oil light was only flickering rather than permanently on you may be lucky.

If you found debris you would obviously need to replace the cambelt (expensive and/or time consuming plus expensive tools).

There are other things like checking certain oilways/filters but you need to get to the root of the problem first.

Ask yourself if all this is worth it.

Yh im into DIY, been doing it for a while, started by fixing suspension components on my and my parents vehicles, then recently got 12plate focus 1.6 petrol with oil in coolant, that was fun to clear and flush the system loads of time... got this out of auction with intension to flip it or keep for my missus, but now im not sure, its very big job to do just on driveway... expensive tools and expensive kit. Worst thing is investing so much money and finding out that its actually ***** beyond fixing. I was thinking about breaking it, but also not sure if i would find someone needing whole complete front end...

Does the timing belt replacement actually needs all suspension being taken off?

The 1.0 Ecoboost Focus doesn't need any suspension component taken off.

Have done it with the engine out and in situ.

Oh i see, i watched an hours video, he took half engine compartment out and took suspension apart. So wasnt really keen on doing it, do you have a video or something how to do it in situ? I do really want to try, but want to troubleshoot the problem first, whether engine ***** or just timing jumped

I'm guessing he did that to provide clearance for leverage to loosen/tighten the crank bolt using basic tools. You probably know that huge leverage will be required to do that without torque multiplier tooling.

Oh i see, yh seen some tools which can be used, pricey and still debating whether its worth the hassle or not.

I'm only a novice here,

But read extensively here and else where ref eco boost wet belt problems etc

If I was U and you intend to keep it

I'd get it checked over properly,

And if it's not damaged I'd change belts and pump ASAP,

Don't drive it
