Ignition/battery/earthing problem?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I recently just bought a 2007 1.2L 5door fiesta style (105k miles) and I’m having issues starting it. When I was looking at it for the first time before I bought it, the battery was flat and needed a jump to start, which once it was running I drove it to Halfords to get a new battery. (When it was running it didn’t have a single problem) i then changed the battery and then tried to start the car and nothing happened, the dash and all electrical things in the car would sometimes turn on when I turned the key (not all the way) and sometimes didn’t, when it did turn on and had power, I then turned it all the way to start the car and the whole dash and everything else would lose power and I’d hear either a click or a few repetitive clicks but no turn over of the engine or starter motor. When I was at Halfords one of the employees took a look and said that the clicking is the starter motor and shows that the starter motor is working and that from what he thinks, its a problem with the earthing of the car is faulting. I’m not great on cars so is that correct or is there something else that could be causing the issues? And if it is earthing, where would the earthing cables be as I’ve searched all the manual I can find and it doesn’t tell me where they are. The only way to get it running is to bump start it and when it is running, it runs without any problems.

thanks in advance

It's a common problem with the Fiesta Mk6 / Mk6.5 when the battery is replaced. A full reset of all modules by disconnecting the battery negative lead for 20 minutes usually fixes the problem.

Disconnect the battery negative lead for at least 20 minutes.

When you reconnect it, WAIT for 5 minutes before turning on the ignition.
