MK3 XR2i rust on front edge of sunroof cutout

Featured Replies

Today I noticed something while standing next to the car at the gas station. I know now it is a usual suspect, but I just didn't it see it when I bought the car last Saturday. It's not a disaster yet, but it will be. While at it I checked if the channels were open by running some water through them, which they both were. What would be the best approach to fix this? Thanks for any pointers!

Cheers, Leon

Ouch! It usually turns out worse than it looks on the surface! Taking it to a body place for assessment and quote might be the best option. As winter is looming it's only going to get worse the longer it's left. If the rust has spread under the paint onto the roof then it's really not easy working on the roof let alone spraying it. If you start picking at it yourself it's easy to get carried away and make it much worse.

Yes, there seems to be quite a bit of cracked/crazed paint in the pics of the other edges so who knows what lurks beneath after over 30 years (though we can probably guess). I'd also get a professional opinion if you are intending to keep the car.

Thanks. I agree and won't start on it myself, but take it to a bodyshop. My plan is to seek professional advice. I intend to keep the car for a long time (hopefully) and want it fixed for once and for all.
