Using forscan to make cigarette lighter turn off

Featured Replies

Hi, I’ve got a 2009 ford fiesta mk7 and was wondering if anyone knew how to use forscan to program the cigarette lighter socket to turn off when the ignition is turned off.

Currently the cigarette lighter stays powered even after the engine is off which is a worry as I have a dash cam and phone charger connected to it. It doesn’t turn off after an hour or so like the mk7.5 models I’ve read about online.

Any advice would be much appreciated

I'd be interested if there was a Forscan solution, but from memory on reading past posts, I fear there isn't. I ended up having a separate 12v socket installed which is controlled by ignition...

There is, but it's a case of someone working out the code for a specific model. Attached is couple of examples for a Fusion (USA)/Mondeo. You will see that even between a 2014 and 2013 the address in the BCM is different.

The subject of the power to the cigar sockets is/has always been a problem. The short answer is that on Ford vehicles they are hard wired with no simple "move the fuse" to change from permanent live to ignition controlled.

On most Ford's these days the sockets are controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM). This means that sometimes the sockets are not always as they first seem. It is now common to find that they are time controlled and remain powered for 10 or 15 minutes after the ignition is turned off and the car is locked.

Not that I have ever tried but it is also possible that the operation state of the socket maybe able to be changed in the BCM settings using a programme called FORScan. Even if it can't be altered in the BCM, it is worth downloading FORScan (it's free for laptop use) and getting a vLinker FS lead. Then in future you will always be able to read any DTC's that might occur, and there are always things that you can adjust.

Unfortunately not, I’ve got the mk7 and I was hoping to avoid rewiring the cigarette lighter to the ignition line myself.

You say 'unfortunately not' but the suggested workaround would effectively be the same in yours. That would indeed be a rewire of sorts though so, yeah, it doesn't fit your preferences.

Personally, I'd ditch the use of the car's cigarette lighter socket though and wire a new socket (hidden behind the dash) for the dashcam and charger powered via a piggback fuse connected to a hot-at-on power source in the passenger fuse box. It should make for a much neater installation and doesn't impact any existing wiring.

Great idea, wish I'd have thought of that. Oh, wait a minute... 🤣

No need for that Stephen. I was just saying what I'd do, not claiming it to be a novel invention.

Update: I couldn’t find a forscan solution so I called out an auto electrician who wired the cigarette lighter to the ignition line through a fuse tap to an empty slot in the fuse box.

Always nice to see ones advice followed 😂

Found this on aliexpress

It's designed for daytime running lights but will do the same thing (obviously run it through a relay as the draw maybe more than it can handle)

When the car is running it will be on when off the voltage drop will turn off after 15 seconds

And only 94p plus post
