Gearbox problem

Featured Replies

Hi people how are we? I’m doing a job for an elderly lady and she told me she stoped at traffic lights and when she went to put it in gear it wouldn’t, first thought I had was clutch but she’s took it to ford and they have said the gearbox has went…. Now the car is a ford fiesta titanium 1ltr eco boost 2019 with 18000 miles….  Would it have a warranty, Surely with that low miles either it’s a faulty gearbox or them at ford are at it…

It's long since out of Ford warranty which is 3 years from date of registration.

If she has recently bought the car (in last six months) then the garage she bought it from may warranty it. Otherwise it's just bad luck. Does she take it cross country rallying or perhaps track day events ? 🤣

Yes, as Unofix light heartedly comments, you just have no idea how people drive and use their gearboxes/c!utch. From the sounds I hear as I walk by the car park near my village shops, I'm surprised some of them last a week.

Joking apart, well out of Ford warranty (unless an extension had been purchased) and I very much doubt they'd make any goodwill gesture. As Unofix mentioned, a recent purchase may be covered by a dealer warranty or consumer legislation but I suspect this lady will have had the car for some time, probably from new?

The box in the previous Mk 7/7.5 Fiesta was known to be problematic. The current 6 speed is supposedly stronger but we are seeing issues starting to arise with that.

Presumably as the lady took it to Ford the car Is still driveable. Is the problem on other gears, or just first? Issues I've mentioned have tended to be 2nd/3rd. Problems getting into 1st/reverse are more often clutch related as you mention, in my experience. Does pumping the clutch pedal make a difference?

If you have a reliable independent garage locally it might be worth a second opinion.
