2002 MK5 Fiesta 1.4 16v petrol - Open door light on

Featured Replies

The open door light is on and I can't lock the car, all doors including the boot are closed properly?

I have done a GEM test and I believe it is the drivers door that is at fault. Does anyone know how to rectify this problem?

The likelihood is that there is a micro switch in the door catch (in the door) sticking. I would try giving the catch a good spray with WD40, to see if that frees it up.

Also, check the wiring between the door and the body, as the loom there sometimes breaks due to being flexed every time the door is opened.

If spraying the catch doesn't work, and the wiring is ok, then the next thing is to change the door catch.

Thank you for replying Alan.

I have sprayed WD40 and WD40 electric contact cleaner into the door latch, and I've wiggled the wiring from  the door to the body but the problem still exists.

I also noticed today that the interior light works when I put it in the on position but it doesn't come on in the door open position when I open any of the doors, this must have something to do with the problem as well I presume?

Microswitches in the door locks are a regular problem, If a front door thinks it is open, then the car cannot be locked.  The micro switch is buried deep in the door lock motor, and is a right palaver to sort out as the whole door lock motor needs to be replaced. (I have done one in a Fiesta, and one in a Fusion.)

But check the connector in the "A" post, disconnect and check the contacts look ok, and maker sure it is done up tight.

Hi Paul, thanks for the comment, much appreciated.

I got down to the micro switches and they seem to be working ok, they are clicking when operated.

I got a replacement actuator from the scrapy today but when I connected it I still had the same problem, so I don't think the actuator is at fault.

As I was putting the socket back onto the door pillar the door tried to lock but couldn't obviously as it still thinks the door is ajar, but once it was fully seated in its socket I squeezed the leads going into the door and it tried to lock itself again, so yes there could be a problem with the wiring at that point, what do you think?

I think that is a good bet, that door has been opened and shut many times over the last 22 years.

I have seen images of cable cores with damaged insulation, and the conductors could be broken.  I think the outer "corrugated" sheath can be pulled back to expose the cores.

It was the wiring in the door. 3 snapped wires and 3 showing the inner core. added new wire, soldered them up and shrink wrapped them. But I still had a problem with the actuator.

The open door light stays off now even when I open the door, it works with all the other doors.

The actuator I got from the scrapy was the wrong one, I couldn't secure it to the door handle housing as the screw holes were in the wrong place, but I was able to test it as the wiring plug was the same and the door light worked fine so I'm on the look out for another one now.
