Grinding noise on cold start for a couple of seconds

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have bought this car as my first ford not too long ago, i have currently got an issue with my turbo and wouldn’t know if it would be causing this noise. The noise lasts for about 3 seconds and is like a gear grinding noise, the only thing i could maybe think is that it’s an oil issue and i have noticed on the last service it had, 5w-30 was used instead of the castrol recommended 5w-20.

I just thought i’d come on here and maybe look for some answers,

-44k miles and service was done last month

Thanks

- I also can’t add a video because it’s too big please can someone show me how using one of those links🤣

Is the oil warning light on while the grinding noise happens?

Hopefully it is only the turbo, otherwise it's likely to be a major internal engine fault.

Videos can't be uploaded here directly.  They have to uploaded to a hosting site (YouTube etc) and then copy & paste the link here.

The oil light just comes on and off the same time as all of the other lights when i start the car, i am currently in the midst of getting my turbo repaired due to a valve issue on the inside of it, could it be the turbo causing the noise then?

I checked my oil yesterday too and all seems fine there

If it's only the wastegate being repaired, that won't be causing a grinding noise.

If the turbo shaft bearing is knackered, that can cause a grinding noise until the oil pressure increases at the top of the engine.

Yeah the turbo itself is rattling like anything when i’m driving and the revs starts to come down so it’s getting sent off for a full rebuild / repair so it could be that yeah?

I have no issues with the engine whilst driving no lights so stuttering or nothing it drives completely fine , just a little ticking noise but i put that down to the turbo, what do you think?

We'll just have to wait until the turbo is refitted I think.  A full rebuild should include a replacement shaft bearing.  If the noise is gone, it was the turbo, if not, we'll have to consider other options.

Just had the turbo repaired, noise still there and now the engine oil light flashes back on for about a millisecond on start🥲

Oh dear.  Sounds like the wetbelt is degrading and starting to clog the oil pump.
