Mk6.5 fez won’t go into gear

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

So I have a query about my 07 mk6.5 fiesta. It’s been sat for about 6 months or so and since I’ve started driving it again the car refuses to go into gear. Immediately after you turn the engine on it engages gears okay, then after about 2 minutes of driving it starts to get progressively stiffer until the car cannot go into gear at all, the stick moves side to side but is like hitting a wall when you try to push it a gear. When I’m stationary it will eventually go in after pumping the clutch a few times but the same solution doesn’t work whilst actually moving. Clutch fluid doesn’t look dark and there are no leaks in the footwell or underneath the car. Any ideas on what may be at fault?

That's almost certainly a clutch fault.  First thing to try is bleeding any air out of the clutch fluid.  Though I suspect the seals in one of the cylinders are failing.

I have also had this fault with a clutch plate where it seemed to be expanding in the heat.  But the fact you can get it to work by pumping the pedal sounds more hydraulic to me.

Thanks for this insight- just to add, before the car was sat, it had no issues at all with the clutch or going into gear. Do you think it would be worth replacing the master cylinder as a first option as that’s a relatively easy solution

That's not surprising.  Cars hate being sat unused.  Rubber seals like these need to be kept moving to keep them in perfect condition.

Yes, if you want to change a part straight away, I would start with the master cylinder for exactly the reason you've said.
