Hi guys, the tailgate handle trim of my mk7 ford fiesta has something peeling off it as shown in the pictures. Is this the clear coat? If so would I be able to remedy this by sanding down the peeling area, reapplying some clear coat and then polishing it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, just the lacquer

Get some very fine wet and dry, sand down the rough edges and reapply clear coat 

Haha I definitely meant peeling. I ended repainting the entire panel as even though I sanded it with 1,500 grit I still ended up going through the base coat. The final finish ended up murky and cloudy though. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what I did wrong or what I could do to fix it. Isn't the chrome insert removable ? Would have saved yourself some time and the edge would have been far neater, give it a few weeks and the lacquer will be dulling down, so you'll have to polish it back up again.
