Ford Fiesta 1.25 starting issue (intermittent)

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just picked up a Ford Fiesta 2011 with 1.25 engine for a cheap runaround but I have started to notice that occasionally the car makes a grinding/wirring sound when trying to crank. This happened yesterday first time when driving back from work. The 1st and 2nd time I tried to turn the car over it just made a grinding noise and didn't attempt to crank over. The 3rd time it just fired up straight away. After getting home and leaving car overnight it fired up straight away this morning but after driving this afternoon a short distance and goign to the shop, it didn't want to crank again after returning back to the car (must of been parked only 15 minutes). Again, 2nd time it fired up in 2 seconds.

I managed to capture it on video when it struggled to crank. After removing key and re-attempting to crank it fired up straight away without hesitation. Once its fired up the car runs spot on and I don't notice any performance issues:

I am edging towards the starter motor being the culprit. Any ideas? Its going in soon for a full service and belt and will mention to the garage as well about the starting issue.

Yes, I'd agree with starter motor.  It's rotating but not being thrust into the flywheel.

Eventually it could fail to start altogether so I wouldn't leave it too long if you are heavily reliant on the car.

Hi thanks for the update. This is just a second car to us as we have a main car and we have it going in to a garage a week after next
