Fiesta 2014 aircon

Featured Replies

So....

My air con wasnt working, decided to get it investigated. Air con condensor, pump and 2 pipes Along with rear axle bushes, front track rod end. Going to cost £1600

That and I've noticed my turbo makes a squeeling noise when accelerating hard over 2K rpm.

Its like half the cost of the car to get it fixed. I already had the wet belt replaced last year.

Should I bite the bullet and fix it or do you think get rid and get a new car. I can just see further issues down the line mounting up.....

I don't understand how those parts add up to anywhere near £1600.  Have you got an itemised quote?

At that sort of price you could get a wet belt replaced again 🤣

Those prices are ridiculous.

Track rod end costs about £20.  Half an hours labour costs £30.  Wheel alignment £50.

I have no idea how they've made that job cost £185!!

I'm now off for dinner so quick reply but all of that work can be done much more cheaply.

Coming back to this:

A new aftermarket condenser costs about £80.

A new aftermarket drier costs about £40.

A new aftermarket or refurbished compressor costs around £150.  Personally I would risk a good used compressor instead.  They are very cheap and readily available.

I don't know which two pipes are needed so can't quote for those.  Though I am sceptical about needing compressor, condenser and two pipes if the AC was working fine until recently.

Cost of regas around £75 now.

Labour to fit compressor, condenser, drier and two pipes approx 3 hours.  Call that £225.

AC repaired for £570.  (Plus up to £100 for a couple of pipes)

Track rod ends are even cheaper than I thought.  Only £10 each aftermarket.  So one side plus wheel alignment approx £100.

Rear bushes are very cheap but awkward to replace.  If we call it an hour each side, plus parts, I'd estimate £200 all in.

That gives us an overall total of £870.  Certainly not cheap, but half the quoted price, and as I say I'm not convinced you need all those AC parts.

Aircon condensor, as it seems to be corroded at the bottom is why they were advising to replace it. However on the video mechanic didn't show me any leaks coming from it.

However the receiver drier along with the pipes, Seems to be where it's mainly leaking as you can clearly see it.

The rear bushes and front track rod end does need done though

I'm not convinced the pipes are leaking, looks like it's just the rubber o-ring that's failed between the pipe and dryer?  Those pipes can be bought for just £30 the pair on ebay though. 2015 FORD FIESTA ST 1.0 PETROL MK7 AC AIR CONDITIONING PIPES AND HOSES REF11255 | eBay

And a used dryer can be had for as little as £15 if you are going down the used route.  Genuine Ford FIESTA MK7 Air Conditioning Condensor | eBay

Or pipes and dryer together for £36 here (although in fairness that particular dryer may not have much life left in it). Ford Fiesta MK7 AC Air Con Pipe 1.0 M1JE Petrol AV1119D848AA 2013-2017 | eBay

O-ring kit costs £50 from Ford, or £30 aftermarket. FORD AC AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER SEALS O RINGS 5181037 DS7H-19D690-AA 12476575 | eBay

Only thing I wouldn't buy used is the condenser because it's so easy to damage the fins during removable, packing and postage.  But they can be bought new for around £80. Air Con Condenser For Ford Fiesta MK7 1.0 EcoBoost Nissens AC 1756410 1767117 | eBay

It's the compressor that really costs the money (unless buying used), so I would check that carefully to see why they're recommending a change for that.  Though as you can see, it is possible to have the AC back up and running very cheaply if you're willing to buy used parts.  Just give them a good check over first and always use new O-rings.

The track rod end is easy enough to do yourself if you're able to try that.  It's literally only 2 nuts after removing the wheel.  If you measure carefully and get the old one to the exact same length as the old when fitted, then you don't even have to have wheel alignment done immediately.  That means it's literally a £10 job for a DIY mechanic on a driveway.

The rear bushes are a pain on many Fords and unfortunately there's not much you can do about those.  Basically if you own a Ford from 5-15 years old, it's almost a dead cert that you'll need to replace the rear bushes at some point.
