1.8 TDCI DMF & clutch removed (condition)

Featured Replies

I replaced the clutch and flywheel at the weekend. The DMF had fused itself solid, no oscillation as it should have, and a pin of some kind dropped out (about 20 x 4mm) I guess from the DMF contraption. Attach a photo of the rear of the engine (before it was cleaned off with brake cleaner, parts cleaner, and a rag with meths to finish). Note the burnt black gunge on the bottom half (I guess frazzled grease from the DMF internal inferno). The clutch had minimal wear. Photo attached. 60k miles, assume original as had the car from 48k (but don't know). I am going to save the clutch (just in case!).

Good job

what oil did you put back in the gearbox

Box is about an inch away from the engine (tantalising!). Light was failing so that's where it's sat (strapped to a jack) until I tackle it (hopefully tomorrow). This last inch will need patience as the input shaft and clutch spline need to match up.

Different for the pros with facilities or who do loads and chuck them in, but if first time, and your first efforts fail (likely) you'll tire fast (and risk damage to box and self). The MTX75 weighs 40-45 kg (100 lbs). Dead weight too.

Millers 75w FE was in - thinner Ford spec oil. As going to SMF, replacing with Castrol Transmax 75w90 MMV to up the protection for the box.

Wrote to Castrol asking their advice if towing (didn't mention SMF as it would have confused things). They said Transmax is fine but just change a bit more often to keep protection levels high.

Should still be a while before a change. I'm reckoning 3 years or 30k miles, whichever soonest.
