Fiesta mhev engine

Featured Replies

Been looking at changing my Fiesta TDCI 1.5 2013 but worried that the hybrid engine will not be reliable.

I understand the hybrid has a chain but not a belt but have been reading that the oil pump is still on a wet belt and can still fail.

I just want to know if this is the case or am I being over cautious.

Thanks in advance

You are correct, the 1.0 EcoBoost MHEV uses a chain for timing and a wetbelt for the oil pump.

So far the number of oil pump belts failing is still far less than the number of timing belts failing on the older engine.  So I wouldn't say it's a 'common' fault yet.  Though the chain engine has only been out for 7 years, and the MHEV for less than 5 years, so long term is still difficult to judge.  The oil pump belt should still be changed at 10 years old and will probably cost over £2k by the time the MHEVs reach that age.

Not at all. Best to ask questions before you buy. Sadly all too often the reverse happens, usually after encountering an issue!

As you appear to keep cars a long time and (presumably) are looking for economy, a Toyota Yaris hybrid might be worth a look. Warranty up to 10 years if serviced within the Toyota network.
