Power folding mirrors.. or not?

Featured Replies

I just drove a customers 2009 bog standard Fiesta the other day and was mildly impressed it had power folding mirrors - nothing particularly unusual there I hear you say..

but it suddenly occurred to me that my 2018 ST Line ecoboost 140, that I've only just bought.. must have them too no?

Picture me now sat in my lovely ST Line, looking around the cockpit for a power folding mirror switch - which I can't find! The manual isn't much help because it covers

different models and doesn't specifically tell you what your model has got. There is a picture of the switch but it doesn't tell you where to find it.

Please, tell me there is a hidden switch I've just not seen for this - because surely, a 2018 model Fiesta must be doing power mirrors seeing as they are on the 2009 car?

It was an option in 2009, it was an option in 2018.

The top spec X trims, usually included it (at least in 2018) but even Ford took that off towards the end of production for cost cutting.

Ah I see, so you could just as easily end up with the same car with the folding mirrors as you could without. Shame it wasn't standard really

Mk6 Fiesta Ghia had powerfold mirrors as standard over 20 years ago.  They were always breaking though...

The switch for Mk8 powerfold mirrors is just below the mirror adjustment switch on the drivers door.  It's not hidden anywhere.

Misc Controls

As Alex has said

ST-Line didn't have powerfolds

ST-Line X did

Cheers for the photo Tom, I just had a look and mine doesn't that switch below the adjustment circle switch, so that answers that question!

No hidden switch, you ain't got them. Another Ford cost cutting exercise. The answer to your next question is can you fit them, yes, but cost would be prohibitive. New mirrors, new wiring loom,  new programming to car etc etc.

Next time buying a car, if any feature is important to you, test properly before you drive, used cars are plentiful, you can always move on to another that has what you want...

Thanks Stephen, I actually wasn't considering doing that because I don't want the aggro. It wasn't important, it was just on my mind when i drove the older car, and then

assumed it would be on mine. But it's no biggie.

Just bought a 2023 St line and was also surprised that it didn't have the power folds.

Not the end of the world but a little dissapointing all the same.

It does however have a button like the one in the picture but not sure what it is yet. Just noticed it on way home tonight on motorway. Looks like a pic of a window on it and when pressed a light comes on.

Forgot to have a look at it properly when I got home.

I really don't understand you guys buying cars. When I do (and it's not often) I sit in the darn thing pressing all the buttons, also testing everything works as it should including A/C. Am I just old fashioned in doing this?

😀 too many buttons. TBH I didn't even know it was a button till I accidentally pressed it. Best guess is it stops the rear windows from being opened. Will know in the morning.

Nothing wrong with being old fashioned BTW.

Yes, that's the rear electric window cut-off.

Door Interior

And pre-empting the next question...  Yes, you can have both!  (On pre-facelift at least)

There's a whole thread on here about the facelift Mk 8 (aka Mk 8.5) including all the stuff which we've so far found (or rather not found!) that it doesn't have.

My dealer pointed out the deletion of power fold when I ordered mine, and the price list just said: "Body coloured, electrically operated door mirrors with side indicators" - no mention of power fold (or indeed heating, which has also gone awol).

The only positive reason for the folding in mirrors is I know when it's locked or not

Agree with you Ian, but in the winter, after I lock the car, the mirrors fold in, but then I unlock so the mirrors fold out so they do not freeze in the closed position.  The car then relocks automatically with the mirrors out !

I've heard many stories about mirrors freezing up in the closed position, had the car from 2010 and never had them stuck, Son has a 7.5 ST for 5 years now and he's never had them freeze up, just unfold every time.

Feeling peeved with myself as I've just broken my n/s mirror - again - on the garage doorpost. As before, I forgot to powerfold the mirrors in when reversing out. There's only about 50cm clear each side with mirrors out and if I'm not paying attention - crunch.  I've probably done it three times now and I'm amazed how much punishment the mirror assembly can take. The cover gets yanked off and the repeater lamp is left dangling but the glass has been ok even though it was dangling on the wiring.   So far I've managed to reassemble it each time but it's decidedly fragile now with fewer clips than it had.

So I'm looking on eBay for a reasonably priced complete replacement and most that confirm  are correct for my car,  I find that they are without powerfold and puddle light. The year (2014) and engine spec are not sufficient.

Id be taking a kango hammer to the garage post and taking a mirror shaped chunk out of it 😂. cheaper than a new mirror every time

When I owned my Mitsubishi FTO, I got a spark to do a mod that the powerfold mirrors auto closed/opened on opening & locking the car...

Violence is rarely the answer. Many moons ago, I got quite vexed while struggling with a repair. So vexed, in fact, that I threw the rather large hammer in my hand at the (wooden) garage door. It went straight through, leaving me with two repairs instead of one!😀

Like you Alan

My garage door is the same, very little clearance either side for the door mirrors. Have hit them going in but have been able to stop before any damage done. Also half way down the garage on the left hand side is a one brick support pillar built into the wall right where the door mirror lines up with when parked. Have lined that with half inch felt as I have hit that a few times going in.

I've disabled the Link to Lock option on the mirrors powerfold 'cos I don't want them opening when I unlock the car in the garage.  I normally have them closed until I'm out of the garage then manually open them. It's boring but I sometimes open them to check the clearance behind before reversing then close them again (but not this time!).

  • 3 weeks later...

I've found loads of likely looking replacement powerfold mirrors on eBay etc around £50 - £60, some in primer which claim to be correct for my car (2014 1.0 Ecoboost) but one example emphasises the "8 wire 10 block" connector. The connector in their photo is more than 10 way which is puzzling. I can't see my connector without removing the mirror, my mirror has the puddle light. Would it be 8 wire?

I've done the upgrade to a 2011 Fiesta, not sure if it's the same on the facelift mk7 though. When they say about the wires it is how many are actually there on the supply side of the connector. The non powerfold mirror will have less wires than the car supply side.

You will have to remove the door card to check, not the mirror itself. The connector will be on the side nearest to the front of the car. Near the window regulator motor

This was mine when i confirmed the 8 wires were present.
