Headlight removal problem, bolt stuck

Featured Replies

I need to remove my offside headlight but the bolt at the bottom, closest to the front of the car (T30 I think) won't unscrew. The part that the bolt is screwed into has come loose and spins with the bolt everytime I try unscrewing it. I can just about get some thin pliers inside the engine bay to clamp onto that piece but it is a very smooth round metal piece and the pliers will just not grip it enough to allow me to turn the bolt.

So how can I remove this bolt? I can't image I can without causing damage.

try mole grips 😊

HI There, Can you post picture so get better idea of issue item

There shouldn't be any bolts underneath to "hold" anything.

Are you sure you're un-***** the right bits?

Random Youtube video showing what to remove.

Had exactly the same problem..

I drilled the top of the bolt to remove the head them removed the light..

Pushed out the part left in the car..then used jack nuts

The will go through the hole left in the car and will expand  under the plastic..then new bolts for the light fixing

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like Danny has experienced the same thing. I'll have a search around for some jack nuts before I drill out the bolt head. Not sure if I sound stupid or not Danny but how do I stop the new jack nut from moving/spinng and creating the same problem?

The picture I have attached is the underneath of the bolt that is holding the headlight in place. The silver bit is what the bolt screws into to secure itself. That is the piece that has come loose and spins with the bolt.

Is there enough space to get a nut splitter in there?

Looks like the bolt has rusted into the fitting. Have had a similar nightmare job removing a rusted bolt from a bush.

Toptip: when you fit new bolt, smear threads with copper slip grease.

Once the old bolt has been removed and before you refit the light..put the jack nut in with the new bolt..you can hold the nut from either underneath or from the flange (good word that) to stop it spinning ...once the bolt starts to squash the lower part it will grip itself

When completey squashed..remove the bolt..replace the light

But as nicam49 says..put some grease on to protect.

I done mine 2 years ago and still fine

Use the correct length bolt when reassembling, it should only come level with the end of the jack nut.

And, as said previously, use copper slip grease!
