Focus 2009 - Radio Issue - passenger side not working.

Featured Replies

Just purchased a 2009 Focus CC, and it looks like the Radio unit had already been swapped, as it should have left the factory with a 6 Disc in dash head unit, but only has a single CD player.

Both the left 'larger' speakers are not working, the front and rear left smaller speakers work fine. I have checked the Balance/Fade, and this is set correctly.

I have tried to search to see if there were any other reports of this, and all I could find on Google were issues in the US, and pelple directly wired the speakers.

I suspect there is a break in the wiring that is common to the front left and rear left main speakers. Has anyone else encountered this ? If so, what was the remedy ?

Thanks

Mark

It is common for the actual speakers to fail on these models.

If I remember correctly one of our regular members has had a similar problem @StephenFord

I too have both rear speakers not working since getting car. Hasn't bothered me at all as I'm of an age where listening to banging: tunes is long gone. 😂

Perhaps you should buy new speakers.

I will if they are defective, but I do think it is odd that both larger speakers on the left hand side dont work at all. I have spare speakers I can use to test, so the easy option is to swap them over and see if the problem also switches to a known working location. If it does switch sides, then the sepaker is bad , if not, then it must be wiring somewhere.

Now to find which speaker is easiest to pull to test...... as i dont really want to take both door cards off.

Thanks all.

My rear speakers haven't workked for a couple of years now.  Can't be bothered to fix it.

Please let us know.

Hold down head unit buttons 3 and 6 at the same time for a few seconds.

This should access speaker test mode. The head unit will play a tone through each speaker in turn. It will also show on the display which speaker is being tested.

I have read that the speakers fitted to the Titanium, Ghia or ST spec cars were better quality and less prone to failure. These are identifiable by their dark blue plastic speaker cones, compared to black paper on the lower quality standard ones.

I have a set of these that I am waiting to fit to replace my failed rears.

Both rear speakers in my better halfs car went in about the same time, only days between. I was so sure it was the head unit so i bought a used one to experience the same problem. Then i tested with a speaker i had lying around and it turned out the speakers were blown.

Thanks for all the feedback, not yet had a chance to try the new head unit, but given all the responses so far, it is probably more likely that both front and rear passenger speakers are defective.

I hope to have time this weekend to try the head swap.

Does anyone recommend a replacement set of speakers ? Are the front and rear the same size ?

The speakers are the same wattage but with different shape. The front ones have an oval casing with four mounting holes, while the rear ones are round with three holes.

The Ford blue plastic cone type fitted to higher spec cars would be a good option for a cheap fix. These are supposed to be better quality.

See links for a few I found with a quick ebay search.

Those prices seem high. I bought a set of four for £20 from a breakers. I did have to remove them myself.

Thanks, not really keen on replacing my duff speakers with ones of the same vintage, as I would imagine it is only a matter of time before they too may stop working. Especially as they have been removed, and handled by the dismantlers and shipping company. Will find out what is broken first before I commit to buying anything.

Again thanks for linking the ones. I do need to make sure they are the same for the CC.

They are the same. I took some myself from a CC at a breakers.

The update is that the Speakers are fine. The problem must have been with the head unit, which was not orginal to the car, as it should have been a in-dash 6 CD changer.

Both front and rear speakers work fine, so that has saved me a mssive job of taking the rear of the CC and the front door apart to replace them.

From what have now seen, I believe all of the CCs were factory fitted with the higher quality speakers.

These are supposedly not known to burn out.
