Buy one of these, or similar, and replace, common fault. By the way, you have a Mk2...

You're making a bit of an assumption there, Stephen. @Des Barron hasn't really provided sufficiently detailed information. It could be a failure of the latch wiring in the loom between body and tailgate. If it were just water ingress into the button the latch should still work from the remote fob.

I entirely agree. Can only go on what is asked. Yes, if he hits the 'boot' button on the fob twice in quick succession, and the boot opens, it's likely a handle replacement will sort. Obviously not urgent as he hasn't been back since posting LOL

Would this still be the same problem that was posted January 2023 ?

Very interesting! He still didn't learn he has a Mk2, and I also gave a similar response to him back them. Maybe not a OPW but a new phenomena - SRP (stuck record poster) 🤣

Let me help !!!

FOCUS 2006 = FOCUS Mk2

PS: You still need a new tailgate handle 🤣

Thanks. Doesn't work from fob.

Have not had the problem before last week so it wasn't me. Sorry about lack of information. I am full of arthritis so waiting till flexible enough to get in boot to remove lock and open tailgate to check wiring.

Well, as I said earlier, if it doesn't work from the keyfob or the tailgate button it's more than likely, on a vehicle of this age, that a wire has fractured in the loom between body and tailgate caused by the repeated flexing.

Sorry to hear about your arthritis. I know from experience how difficult that can make working on a vehicle.

Odd though that issue on his Mk2 has been hanging around for almost 2 years, first posted here January 2023!

Well maybe my memory is going but I think last week was the first time I had the fault.

I had completely forgotten. The fault disappeared and started working correctly. Could this be a clue? The fob doesn't open the boot.

Whilst your being so helpful. Can I ask another question? Couple of days ago the temperature needle went up, I checked the coolant level and it was low by about 2.5 litres, never had that sort of loss before, topped up and no problems for a couple of days with two minor changes. The interior air heater temperature is only warm not hot as it was before and the cooling fan stays on for a couple of minutes after engine switch off. Any ideas.

Please be gentle!! I am 78 living in my car no money no family with heart and arthritis.

Thanks Des

Des, with the greatest of respect, if you are living in your car, I would suggest the issue of water temperature and a faulty boot are the least of your problems. Please can you seek the services of your local council, whose emergency housing officer should be able to offer some lifestyle choices...

Tried that. Again and again over the last 10 years. They offerred me a mould infested room, safer in the car. Plus I have some life/freedom. If I go with social services the car would go. There thousands in the same boat. I had planned to work till I died but arthritis and heart meant no one would employ me plus I couldn't do much anyway. Everybody thought I'd be dead by now! Thanks for your help.

They shouldn't. Mine is the original 19 year old one - they just sometimes fail...

I'd be very surprised if it is original.  I've had to change several of them between 5-10 years old on Focus & Fiesta.

Interesting point, is there a way to determine the age of the cap?

Don't think so.  The genuine ones are cheap enough that I always used to stick with them rather than going aftermarket.  So being genuine doesn't necessarily mean it's original.
