Fiesta 1.25 cam belt.

Featured Replies

Hi all.
I’m after a little advice please, regarding a cam belt change on my daughters 16 plate fiesta 1.25. It currently has 85k.

This is a job that I’ll have done at a garage.

My question is: Should I get the water pump done too?

As far as I’ve read, the pump is behind the belt, but not run by it?

My thinking though, is would a non genuine water pump probably pack up before the genuine one that’s on there now?

I find that non genuine parts only seem to have a short lifespan nowadays, no matter what the part.

So should I ask for just the belt, and if so is there any adjuster etc to make sure is done at the same time.

Thanks in advance. Gary.

I would, while it's all off

Buy a genuine one👍

Yes, but...  The cambelt tensioner is bolted through the waterpump.  So you would have to remove the belt again if the waterpump failed in future.

The tensioner should always be replaced at the same time as the cambelt.

The waterpump is really your choice though.  I agree that a cheap one may not last any longer than just leaving the original.  However, the genuine waterpump costs £200 from Ford.  So it's not something to just change on a whim either.

Thanks.

I could ask the garage to use genuine I guess.
£200 is a bit steep for a water pump isn’t it. But if that is a true reflection on quality. Leaving the original might seem more attractive.

difficult choice.

Buy the pump from Ford yourself one month then have the job done when you're ready, tell them you'll supply the pump

I could do that. The only issue is, when you supply parts to a garage, if there’s any issue at all down the line, the garage will say it’s the part you supplied. I could ask them to supply it though. If they do or not is another question. Thanks Dave.

There is that.

As soon as I typed it, I thought it.

I would definitely recommend changing it though, sorry

Thanks.

Our cambelt needs changing now, car is a 10 plate but only done 60,000 miles, I hear many horror stories of people changing the belt & pump at certain garages, only for the replaced pump or tensioner to fail a year on......Scares me to death you are getting something done to make the engine live longer only for it to fail later on by shoddy quality replacement parts, who are these people we put our trust in to get the jobs done, total strangers in many cases.

I'd do the job myself to know it's done properly but got a bad back, so can't bend over no more.
