Fuel data vanishing?

Featured Replies

Has anyone encountered this?

My fuel data has vanished (but does come back and go off again after starting up at times)- The only thing I can think is that there might be a loose connection? I'd just been driving on an unpaved road with 'tank tracks, which cause vibration - we have a lot of those where I live. Possibility? If so where would I look for a connection/sensor to check (perhaps even the name would help)?

Anything else it might be?

Thanks....

PS: 2014 diesel

First I've ever seen of this fault. Does the fuel gauge still work correctly ?

Yes, fuel gauge is all normal.

Wonder if anyone knows where the sensor is that feeds this data?

There isn't a sensor for it.  The fuel consumption data is calculated by the PCM using fuel pressure and injector duration to work out how much fuel is being injected.  I suspect this is a fault within the PCM, unless this data is sent separately to the cluster, in which case it could be a cluster fault as well.

What is the battery like?

If the voltage drops significantly when trying to start the engine, the trip computer can lose its memory.

This happened to mine a couple of times just before the battery on my car suddenly died completely.

Replaced battery (after needing a jump start at the local supermarket), no problems since!

Alan, battery is fine. First thing I checked.

Thanks Tom, could be a clue there (I should point out I'm no mechanic 🙂). Initially I thought given driving conditions - essentially off road tracks with lots of dust and vibrations I'd imagined a bad connection of some sort. But it might be related to other issues from what you suggest. Had a nightmare recently with DPF and regen. DPF cleaned, pressure sensor changed, and finally pinned it down to the vaporiser/injector - which is currently on order. In the meantime my mechanic has put another Ford part in (I think from a C-Max, he says it's pretty much the same) for me to be able to use the car and test it definitely is that the problem. Now regening fine, but perhaps if a slight mis-match could that be the possible cause?

Having said all that, the reason, like Alan suggested, I checked the battery first was Forscan seemed to suggest something more electrical in nature.

That code does seem to confirm an issue between the PCM & cluster.

I don't think it will be anything to do the vaporiser but no harm in waiting until that work is complete before moving on to this.

I think the wiring needs to be tested between PCM & cluster.  You will need to remove those parts and find a wiring diagram for your model if doing the testing yourself.  Otherwise ask an auto electrician to do the testing instead.

Yes, I think it might be best to get the job with the vaporiser is done - and hope for the best!

If it stays this way I'll look at it separately. Though best not dome myself, I'm no mechanic (as an IT guy I like to work things through in my head but don't trust myself with a spanner 😉). In my head I'm convinced it is - hopefully - a connection. But happier having a pro look at it properly!

Appreciate your comments and help. Thanks!
