Mk2 - Steering Wheel Vibration

Featured Replies

Hi, can anyone help with this issue?

The steering wheel vibrates under breaking at high-speed.

Could the brake disc be warped?

Or could it potentially be a wheel that isn’t balanced correctly?

Any ideas how I would confirm this?

Thanks

Unbalanced wheels usually cause a wheel wobble at a set speed.  If it only happens only braking, I would rule out balancing.

Brake disc fault would be my first thought.  It could also be an ovalled rear drum.

Would a rear drum cause make the steering wheel vibrate? How does that happen?

I’d only thought it could be an issue with the front braking system not the rear?

Is there a way to check?

You can check for run out as per the attached.

If you replace the discs ensure the hub faces are free of rust and spotlessly clean.

The hubs on Focus distort very easily, even the slightest knock against a kerb with a road wheel can distort them (personal experience) and the wheel will show hardly any damage or non whatsoever. When/if discs are removed "lock" the hubs in place with spacers and wheel nuts and check hubs for run out.

In my own experience initially I only replaced the discs - it was fine for 2,000 miles and the vibration/judder came back, checked for run out and as it was a distorted hub causing the problem, so 2 more new discs and a hub, job done (pads not changed as car was only 3,000 miles from new)

Good point.  I must have been thinking of pedal vibration when I wrote that.  Wouldn't expect the rear brakes to cause a steering wheel vibration.

Well I've got 2 brand new front hubs (SFK VBKA3660) so it must be the discs that are warped?

I do have another set but they are the cheap nasty EICHER ones!!!

Is there any recommendations for a brand that is as good as OEM / GENUINE?

I would buy genuine but it's so much more expensive.

Were the wheel bolts tightened with a torque wrench?  The hubs can warp if the bolts are left at very different tightnesses for a while.  Was the vibration present before the new hubs?  That should rule them out if so...

I prefer Pagid discs myself.  But I'm sure there are plenty of decent ones now.  Brembo from ECP are awful (pretty sure they're not actually Brembo but rebadged from someone else).  And as you say, Eicher are poor as well.  Generally discs are discs, just a lump of steel, pads make far more difference to braking, but those are the two brands of discs I've had trouble with in the past.

Not necessarily, but unlikely.

I've always had good results using Drivetech discs/pads (from GSF)
