Hi, 

Just been changing the battery and noticed a hole at the top of the gearbox. Done a bit research and have found what should be on as circled in the picture.

could anyone please advise what it is and what should be there so I can fix, will anything have fell out of it?

    It's a breather vent.  Not an immediate concern but over time you could end up with bits of dirt & grit or water getting in there.  I would want it covered again myself.
