Focus 1.6 tdci won’t start

Featured Replies

Hi all, I bought a 08 plate 1.6 tdci with 113k on the clock. It drove through the auction perfect and the driver said it started ok and sounded ok. But when I went to pick it up the day next it wouldn’t start,  it won’t fire at all, also I noticed that when the ignition is turned on the fuel gauge , windows and radio won’t work till after about 30 seconds, but no matter how hard I try it just won’t fire. Also smoke is coming from the exhaust and I think under the bonnet too as I’m turning it over.  I also noticed when I took the engine cover off that the previous owner has put a primer hand pump. Any ideas what could be causing this.  I’ve also put a couple of pics of the codes etc.

That isn't a 1.6 TDCI.  It's a 1.8 TDCI.  Not just being picky, they are from entirely different engine families.

The primer bulb will be because of a leak on the low pressure fuel circuit.  Pump it up until it's really hard then try to start the engine.

The immobiliser fault can prevent starting if it's a current fault.  But it might be an old one.  That's usually caused by a cluster fault.

Sorry my mistake , yes it’s a 1.8 tdci. Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve tried pumping till hard and even as I’m turning it over , but it just won’t fire. I’ve asked the auction if they can possibly ask the previous owner how they got it started as it’s obviously happened before.

Do you have 2 keys for it?  The immobiliser fault could be caused by a faulty chip in one key, if the auction house used the other key to start.

Also what's the battery voltage like?  Have you tried a jump start?

The fact that it's smoking suggests fuel is getting through, if it's pure white smoke, then the glowplugs are probably not working.

Whack-a-dash?  As it’s a 2008, just give the dash a slap directly above the speedo/tacho cluster and see if anything changes.
Worth a try .

Tbh I was thinking about unplugging the cluster and replugging to see if anything changes.

Just a wiggle on the plug may be enough to show up defective solder or tapping it
