first start problem

Featured Replies

evening all 2011 ford ranger registration bk11 hxg ,

starting engine after sitting overnight turns turns and turns then eventually fires up after no problem starts on a turn key , weather doesn't seem make any different, had starter motor fitted battery tested ok , any ideas were to go next ???

Sounds like your getting air in the fuel system, check fuel lines and around fuel filter, you probably won’t find a leak only needs a pin hole for air to get in though.

Read the Ford specific DTC's using FORScan should have been your first action, would have saved the cost of a starter motor.

Agree strongly - if there's a transparent fuel pipe section, look at that for bubbles when someone else starts it up.
Then it's a matter of finding the leak (cover fittings with grease/use Mityvac to vacuum test various sections - need to get some appropriate fittings)

You may not get fault codes but looking at the demanded rail pressure and actual rail pressure would confirm that there's a lack of fuel pressure until it starts.
My other point with any fuel problem is .. change the filter just in case!
Have just had to change 2011 filter housing complete to fix an air leak (confirmed by Mityvac vacuum test across it)

still having issues with ranger but have got better , its been in garage twice with no success so I clamped the diesel fuel line to the pump from the Everest filter , started ! but after still took a while of turning ,

so I bypassed the Everest filter /manual pomp joined the in coming and out together same again sluggish start but started after few mins of turning .

question when I removed the supply from the diesel tank the fuel ran back to the tank, should this do that ?

is there a primary pomp in the fuel tank ? if so could this be a failure point ?

now changed

battery

glow plugs

crank sensor

crank angle sensor

maf sensor

starter motor ( garage advised possible lazy starter )

No tank pump on these, so you can rule that out at least.

If it starts, that is real progress!

I don't think (although I am never pedantic about anything) fuel should run back to the tank (will obviously cause difficulty starting, at least on my vehicle with only the HP pump, no lift pump) so my post above suggesting vacuum testing sections of the fuel line and the filter housing itself (since that seemed to improve things?)  to find any air leak is, I think, still relevant  - your choice as ever but do let us know when a solution is found.

But unless I'm missing the point, what is an Everest filter please?

Everest filter please?

Well......... it's either a new type of double glazzing to keep the snow out  😉, OR, it is probably one of these: https://shop.ford.co.uk/products/ranger-2-2-2-4-tdci-everest-diesel-fuel-filter-body-pump

That is one stupid price, glad I don't need one, looks like a priming pump you used to get included on Citroen BX.
So, if fitted and used to prime, fuel should not flow back to tank?

If you haven't replaced the "Everest filter" (someone obviously had a fun day deciding on the name and the price) then it could have a leaking diaphragm (had that on the old Mondeo)

new update if anyone needs in future

as before common rail sensor changed starting still not the best , but ! eureka !

cold weather here and two of us leaning over the engine while running mulling over the next episode in cold start problem one of our cold breaths past across top of engine and we both saw a mist pushing up from a injector, quick mix of fairy liquid and water and small brush pushed around injectors showed a small blowing of fuel from number 3 injector stripped down and nightmare to get the injector out and it was a loose injector bolt new injector as old one blackened and practically welded itself in position fired up every day on the turn of key , so must been no compression in engine change all injectors now , may help someone in future ??
