Focus MK2.5 subframe bushes

Featured Replies

I replaced both passenger side front subframe bushes by dropping the subframe and using a bush / hub tool. It went well enough.

But on the driver's side, the subframe doesn't drop as low because of the steering rack / column. Without dropping the rack, clearance to extract and replace the bushes is at least an inch less than needed as a bit of extra space is required for the tool's bolt that passes through the bushing and cup and the nut on top.

Dropping the steering rack on the drive with just the clearance of axle stands was on the edge of my comfort zone so as the original bushes on the passenger side were still in decent condition after 16 years, I left the driver's side bushes alone. I can see the forward one has a hairline fracture, but they look clean and not crumbling. Another day perhaps ...

So question: Can the drivers side front subframe bushes be replaced without dropping the steering rack? Has anyone managed it? And how?
