Coolant dumped, over revved & white smoke.

Featured Replies

So driving back from work Monday in my 2011 fiesta 1.6 tdci ECONETIC. Popped coolant pipe off from behind fuel filter housing, over revved and white smoke coming from injector 1 and exhaust. Isn’t diesel runaway as turned off at the key. Managed to get it running with a rough idle but after 10-15 mins put foot on the accelerator and cuts out. No lights on dash. Any help?  Tia

I'm struggling to see how a coolant pipe has anything to do with an injector?  Was this all within the space of a few seconds?  Did the coolant reservoir empty?

If one injector got stuck open for any reason then the engine will rev itself like a runaway, but once power is cut to all 4 injectors it'll stop as it won't run on just the stuck one.

I suspect injector one is stuck open or faulty in some way.  But I don't know how that's related to the coolant pipe, unless water got into some electrics?

It is also possible that the cylinder head cracked around the injector if it was run with no coolant for any length of time, though that seems unlikely.

Head gasket failure ? 🤔

What mileage has the engine done ?

My thoughts exactly chap. It literally all happened in one go. The tank was empty but when refilled it come out of the blown pipe. So placed it back on and filled up no problem. No lights on dash just rough idle and white smoke from exhaust now. No smoke from injector

It’s currently sat on 212000

Ok, I'm not sure quite how the sequence of events occurred but I now strongly suspect the white smoke in the exhaust is coolant from a cracked head or blown headgasket.  Next test should be a CO2 sniff on the coolant to confirm exhaust and coolant mixing.

Thank you so much both of you. I’ll get one ordered and report back. Appreciate you’re time and knowledge

Managed to borrow a head gasket tester and it’s come back fine. Taken both fuel pipes off at the filter and the filter isn’t receiving fuel.

These don't have an electric tank pump.  There won't be any fuel at the filter just by switching the ignition on.  You will now need a manual hand pump to re-prime the fuel system.

But if I’m right in saying correct me if I’m wrong. If I cranked it with both pipes off fuel should at least came out of one shouldnt it? Or is that me being blonde and all it needs is to be re primed

Ah !!! so we now know the colour of your hair 🤣

With no electric 'lift pump' fitted in the fuel tank, the fuel has to be sucked through to the engine by the high pressure pump. Disconnecting the fuel lines before the HP pump will only result in the pump sucking in air.

I suspect it needs a lot more than being re-primed after the earlier symptoms.

But it will need re-priming now the pipes have been disconnected.  That's just the first step towards diagnosis...

Well you know what they say!!🤣 just had me hella confused but off out tomorrow to grab the tool but I know for sure it definitely doesn’t answer the other problems but we’ll soon see. Thanks chap

Yes definitely chap. My thoughts exactly! But I’ll start with that, just really strange with it not bringing on a EML light or anything

Morning guys! Back in the engine bay this morning after grabbing the prime tool yesterday todo the fuel filter. Ive stripped it down as decided to just grab a new filter while I’m there. I can now see that the coolant pipe which had blown off is in fact the one off the egr cooler

That's interesting.  Normally I would suggest the EGR cooler cracked inside and leaked exhaust into the coolant, pressurising it until it blew the pipe off.  But you say the CO2 test came back as negative.

Im going to install the fuel filter and retest again chap as I’ve clearly done something wrong as it doesn’t make sense. If that’s the case what step shall I take? Can I delete the cooler and egr or is it just safe to replace? Tia

2011 was the crossover year between 16v & 8v 1.6 TDCI engines in the Fiesta.  Do you know which one you have?

Replacing the cooler is fairly cheap and easy on the 16v, not so much on the 8v.

EGR can't be deleted on these without having it mapped out so it would probably be cheaper and easier just to replace the cooler if that has failed.

I couldn’t tell you chap if I’m honest. Just trying todo some digging now to find out.

I think it’s a 8v buddy. That’s me guessing going off the hp/bhp figures on Google

Ok, 95ps is 8v, 90ps is 16v.  But the engines look completely different from the top so easy to tell visually as well.

This should be the EGR cooler setup on your car.  The EGR valve can just be swapped from yours to the new part.
