Key fob range

I have a focus.  I have two coded keys.  They unlock the car with the keys.  They start the car, no problem.  But, they will only operate the door lock and unlock from inside the car when the key is put next to the barrel.  Both keys have had new batteries of two different makes.  Both keys have been reprogrammed many times.  Is there a receiver inside the steering wheel cover that could be faulty.  



If the problem is only with locking/unlocking and you are 110% sure that the keyfob batteries are good (3.3V) then the issue is with the RKM.

On a 2004 model it may well be a separate module. later cars had it built in to the BCM. @DaveT70 knows a bit about the remote key modules.
