Best way to black all chrome on Fiesta (on a budget)

Featured Replies

Thought I would ask the experts here for some advice as hubby and me cannot agree on this one!

I have a Fiesta that I am planning on modifying a little, nothing major - mainly cosmetic to enhance her look, but maybe some mechanical tweaks in the future.  My starting point in this project is that I would really like to replace all of the chrome trim and alloys on the car and make them black - and this is where we can't agree.  I want the car to look good and not like a "bodge job" but we are also on a very tight budget 😬

  • Hubby suggests DIY with black wrapping of some type
  • I suggested DIY but with paint
  • The other option is to take her to a body shop (but the cost is a lot)

Can we have your opinions please?  We are also of course open to any other suggestions that we haven't thought of 😁

*Apologies - just noticed I've posted this in general chat rather than the Fiesta section*

This is a much more difficult job than you'd think. Even hubbie's idea of wrapping the trim, to do it properly would involve the removal of the trim so you can properly tuck the edges of the wrap round it to properly conceal it. Painting it would involve massive strides to mask the car off, sanding down the chrome finish so paint would adhere, then waiting for a warm day 14c+ to paint as paint doesn't like the cold.

My option would be to let a body shop handle it. Yes, the most expensive option, but it would be done right. At least worthy of getting a quote to see what you're up against...

Option 4 is to seek out standard 'black' trim from a similar variant car and swap it over...

Thank you

So it seems that both DIY options are out (the painting at least until summer next year!)

I'll try some body shops and get some idea on a price, like I said I don't want it to look "bodged" so you are right that a professional is probably the best way to go, I was trying to be thrifty with the DIY suggestions 😆

In addition, the chrome would have to "etch primed" so that the regular primer would adhere.

Isn't the front quarter windows bonded to the body ? Changing those small windows isn't going to be cheap, mostly shatter on removal.

I'd seek out some place that wraps cars and ask how much.

PlasticDip spray. You'll need the priming adhesive promoter before applying
