Ecoboost belt replacement

Featured Replies

We have a 19 plate Fiesta Active which has the dreaded ecoboom engine. It’s done about 55k miles and in the service  book it’s only had 2/3 services. I know these engines are a bit unpredictable when it comes to reliability so i’m wondering how much an average timing belt replacement would cost all in and if it’s worth doing.

Daughters 2015 Fiesta's engine went a few weeks back, RAC attended and diagnosed the cam/wetbelt had gone and the engine was now u/s, it had 58,000 on the clock but no service history when purchased in March  with a 3 month warranty, so doubt the service schedules followed, battling with finance company now🫣

It's difficult to give an average because costs vary massively depending on area, amount of work done (oil pump belt, waterpump etc) and the type of garage used.

Generally I would expect around £1200 at a decent independent.  Or £1600 at a Ford dealer.  But we have seen prices as low as £900 and up above the £2k mark.

Whether it's worth doing depends entirely on your circumstances and how long you intend to keep the car.  If it's only short term and you don't particularly like it then it doesn't seem worth it.  If you like the car and intend to keep it for another 5+ years then it becomes more financially viable.

Surely it's clear if it's 2 or 3? Whatever, the official Ford recommendation for the Mk 8 Fiesta is 18,000 miles/2 years whichever first so it would seem to meet that, though most of us recommend yearly oil changes for the Ecoboost.

I'd probably give it a couple more years, subject to annual servicing, before making the "stick or twist" decision. You may have seen Ford's recent revised criteria for out of warranty goodwill support for premature belt failure on the Ecoboost as below.

Maybe it's two thirds of a service 😁

Not sure two thirds of an oil filter would be very effective.

(Sad to say I read it in exactly the same way though! )
