2019 Focus 1L Ecoboost - Rough Idle and Stall when braking.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have a 2019 Ford Focus 1L Ecoboost Manual, in the past year the car has displayed this issue twice along with other issues.

The other day after driving for 60 miles I came up to a roundabout, as you do clutch in and put it into 1st gear, I noticed something felt weird so with clutch still in I looked at my revs and they were sat at 400ish, which is obviously lower than idle. I proceeded to set off at the round about giving it a bit more revs and then it just stalled. Would not start again and had to get pushed off the roundabout. 5 Minutes go past as I try a couple things like get out the car lock it, unlock it and see if that works as I thought it might be an immobiliser issue. Had a look under the bonnet for any obvious signs of damage, there was nothing. Hopped back into the drivers seat and the car took about 10 seconds to start however after hearing it crank over for that long it fired up and idled absolutely fine. Now it has done that twice in the past year, thankfully I was not on a motorway for either of those situations.

Another issue with the car that could be related is at least twice a month the car will randomly go into limp mode and I will have no boost. This can be cleared with a OBD scanner or by restarting the car. The only DTCs I get for that are P0299 Turbocharger low boost, which makes sense because the car has gone into limp mode and there won't be any boost.

In the past year the car has started with these issues, it has had a new high pressure fuel pump, multiple sensors on the entire car, new gearbox. The car is on 67k miles.

The low boost issue needs investigating.

Try running on E5 fuel (Stick a tank full of TESCO 99) and see if it goes away

When were the spark plugs changed?

Unfortunately a full tank of E5 does not do the trick as it still randomly goes into limp mode, spark plugs were changed roughly 1 year ago along with the coil packs more recently.

My only thought could be maybe the BCM is dying, when it gets to warm? I am clutching at straws so tempted to wash and clean it and sell it.

Of course it could be the other way around, you actually have experienced a low boost situation and that has activated limp mode and the fault code. Have you checked for the common problem of a split/deteriorated silicone valve in the vacuum pump?

As you say you have already changed obvious items with no success, I would take a punt at checking/testing or replacing the evap purge valve. Although not clearly implicated when browsing online, I'm sure I've read somewhere that a sticking valve can cause hard to trace issues with low and rough idle.

Out of interest, why did the gearbox need replacement?. Very early at 67K.

BCM has nothing to do with engine running

Set yourself up with FORScan and get the codes read properly, see what else is showing up

Download FORScan for free:

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

I will check when I finish work tonight. Cheers for that it is another thing I can check.

Not sure randomly just blew up, went from 1st to 2nd on a roundabout and it blew cost over 2k for a refurbish.

Apologies I didn't mean the BCM I was supposed to say the ECU, could it potentially by a driver issue in the ECU. I do have forscan however my knowledge of cars and the CAN bus System.

Get connected and see what codes you are getting
