Fiesta wet belt / remap

Featured Replies

Hi all

Purchased a fiesta for my wife on Monday as a small cheap replacement car. She doesn't do many miles, roughly 4000 a year.

The car has 98000 miles and is 10 years old with full service history (majority from halfords) i will be taking it to ford instead.

Is there any way to find out if the wet belt has been changed? No garage receipts were provided with the car only the service book with stamps. It has 18 month warranty included which is a bonus.

The car also has a turbo gauge fitted to the drivers air vent, would this also suggest it's been remapped as I wouldn't have thought you would add this unless it has. Does anyone know the standard boost pressure for the 1.0L 125hp ecoboost?

Just looking for some advice really as it's only a cheap run about.

Thankyou

If someone's sold the car at 10 years old with 98k miles, it will almost certainly be to avoid replacing the wetbelt.

There isn't really any way you can tell the belt has been changed.  Though so many parts of the engine have to be disturbed to access the belt, you may be able to tell by the friction marks on bolt heads and clean areas that have obviously been touched recently.  Ultimately the best way to find out is to contact the previous owner or the garage that's done the recent servicing.

I was thinking that too that it could have been sold to avoid the change after reading how much it costs to have the wet belt changed. Wish I had known about the wetbelt previously to buying the car but thought it would have the usual cam belt on the side of the engine as never heard of the wet belt until reading about it.

I'll have a look around the engine to see if I can spot any clean sections or bolts have been disturbed. Is there any tell tale signs that might suggest the wet belt could be on its way out or does it go fairly fast without warning.

Regards

Alec

A lady on here the other week was at about 60,000 miles, full service history and booked in for the following week to get the belt changed.

And bang!

Get it changed ASAP or, if you can get your money back, move it on ASAP and buy something with a dry belt or chain. I would

Well, if it breaks there is no warning and the engine is toast!

Otherwise, as the belt degrades over time particles will block the oil pump strainer and the warning light should appear. Similarly we have heard of the vacuum pump for the brake servo being affected, leading to loss of braking power.

If the engine is stopped immediately at that point, and the belt changed and other components cleared of debris or replaced, there is a chance of saving the engine.

Unfortunate that you were unaware of the issue after all the coverage over several years in the press, TV, and social media like Facebook.

You'll find plenty on here about belt replacement costs, but around £1800-£2000 at a Ford dealer, less at an independent, plus any other work. A full engine replacement could make more sense:

wet belt servicing costs are coming down thanks to independents. i wouldn't sell a good car to avoid the replacement cost

Spear Cars

Is that your garage and is that £799 all in?

How long does it take to complete?

Thankyou

I haven't used them, but they look to have a loyal user base. It's probably best to get in touch with them

Once you get the wet belt sorted, I wouldn't be taking a 10 year old car anywhere near a Ford main dealer! Plenty of local reliable independents around who do not have to finance marble flooring or expensive coffee machines!

In fairness, not all Ford dealers have the marble flooring, etc. There are still a few small family owned  non-chain Ford dealers around who do a decent job at reasonable price. Not many left though, and I fear their days are numbered.

It's been a while since I was in a Ford dealership but they definitely didn't have marble flooring or anything to make the servicing prices worthwhile.  They did have a large plot in a desirable area though, I suspect that's where a lot of their money goes.

Me too, but there's a main dealer in Belfast that is very plush LOL Indeed it's just beside their Mercedes dealership which I sometimes pop in to when in the vicinity, as their toilets are just lovely, and they have a 'free' patisserie/snack counter with excellent waitress service, and very nice coffee! Gives my ego a small boost too sitting amongst the hoi polloi awaiting their 'company' car being pampered...

Ah, I've never been into a Mercedes dealership.  I did go into an Audi dealership once, scruffy clothes, middle of a car job, not sure I've ever felt so out of place anywhere else!

(They didn't stock the part I needed either.)

Standard turbo pressure is 1.2 max 1.3 bar (around 17-19 psi).

So on full throttle (probably on 4th gear) if it shows more higher than that it means that perhaps it is remapped.

Better ask the workshops the former owner visited or the former owner himself if it is changed.

If it isn't changed then better change it and keep in mind only engine oil that meets this requirement should be used
