Overfilled fiesta engine oil saga

Featured Replies

Hello, I purchased a 2015 fiesta early may 2024 everything was smoothly until I noticed a pretty nasty oil leak early July 2024. I went back and forth to multiple garages but no one wanted to work on the job. I took it to a local garage he looked at it but suggested the car needed a steam clean to determine where the leaks were coming from. At this point they told me the oil dipstick was showing at a minimum level. I spoke to the people that sold me the car and they said they will take the car back for it to be properly examined (were now in October) . I replied "that's great" and they picked up from my location. a couple of days into not having a car the guy that sold me the car sent me a image of the dipstick(see attached). He was saying that the car was overfilled with 6.5 litres of oil. I was baffled and I could tell that he was trying to put the blame on me. I had the car for 1-2 days after it went with the previously mention garage but never put any oil in. 6.5 litres is comical.

1 week and a bit later I went to pick up the car and upon arrival he instantly started to blame me for the issue but worded his words very carefully. and asked "do you know how to fill up the car properly" I laughed. He told me it wasn't the head gasket or any injector depositing any fluids in with the oil but the seal, the issue was the seal. the car hasn't leaked since and I'm day 2 of having the car back.

any suggestions on why this happened would be appreciated

The disptick on this engine is notoriously unreliable.  They often read low, so people put more oil in, then they end up over-filled.

It probably is exactly as they said, though obviously we have no way of knowing who put all that excess oil in.

I'm not at all surprised by this.  The last time I had a 'service' (just an oil and filter change), I checked the dipstick afterwards (as I always do to see they have done anything and to see if the oil looks new) and according to the dipstick, they had overfilled .  I knew this was bad practice but not had any adverse effects.   I've used a well known (in the Midlands anyway)  independent garage for several years and recall having this happen before by this and other garages (including a Ford dealer).  I believe they just suck the old oil out via the dipstick and dump a book- specified amount back in. No time- consuming removing of drain plug and waiting like you would do it properly yourself.

I suppose it depends just how over-filled it is.
