Mk2 - Clutch Replacement - Low Biting Point on Clutch Pedal

Featured Replies

Hi need some advice please.

Just replaced the clutch, pressure plate and concentric slave cylinder.

When I operate the clutch pedal it feels very soft and the biting point is very low.

I did vacuum bleed the slave cylinder with a handheld Laser tool / vacuum gun to pull through the brake fluid from the master cylinder.

Thinking that maybe I hadn’t pulled enough through / bled the system enough?

Any ideas?

Should I rebleed the concentric slave cylinder again and for longer?

Simple answer would be yes.

It sounds like you still have air in the system.

Try bleeding manually using the pedal.  You should see if there are any air bubbles left in the clear pipe from the nipple.

Not too sure of the steps to perform a manual bleed? Do you need 2 people?

Or is it case of pump the clutch pedal a few times then keep it held depressed then open the bleed nipple and repeat a few times?

Is the Laser 8018 vacuum break bleed not going to work?

I also have a Gunson Eezibleed pressure bleed too but I remember reading you shouldn’t use this to bleed the slave cylinder but I could be wrong.

Appreciate your help! Thank you.

You either need 2 people OR a one-way valve such as the Vizibleed kit.

For both methods you just attach the clear pipe to the nipple and watch for bubbles in it.

With two people one needs to be at the clutch end, opening the nipple before the pedal is pressed, then closing the nipple before the pedal is lifted each time, otherwise the old fluid gets sucked back up again.

With a one-way valve you just open the nipple and leave it open once the pipe is connected.  Press and release the pedal, then get out and have a look at the pipe for bubbles.  When there are no longer any bubbles coming through, close the nipple and remove the pipe.

Generally a vacuum bleed will work on cars in garages where the job is completed within a few hours.  But if the clutch line gets left open for days then air gets into the MC which seems to need a pedal push to shift it.  Another member (TDCIMan) had exactly the same issue on a Mk2 Focus a couple of weeks ago.

All sorted after a manual bleed.

Took quite a few attempts to clear the air but biting point is back where I should be and operating correctly.

Thanks for the help.
