Ford Focus Mk2 - High revs accelerating?

Featured Replies

Hi all - My 2008 Focus Titanium I feel is coming towards the end of it's lifespan, I've had the car for a good 11 years but with my new job I've ended up doing a lot more motorway miles the past several months.

I noticed a problem occuring about a week ago, just as I was accelerating from 0-40mph there felt like a loss of acceleration but a high rev count between 3rd and 4th gear.

My rev counter shoots up to around 4,000(rpm?), if i keep my foot on the accelerator the high revs continue. Obviously as I feel this might cause damage I lessen my foot on the pedal and gradually increase it, once it's in motion there is no issue - Unless I'm going up a steep incline.

I thought it might be something to do with oil needing a top up, but when I checked I was within range - I topped up anyway but it's made zero difference.

With the age of the vehicle, I'm pushing to look at getting a new car now, I feel like a repair being required would be negligible against the price of what the car is now.

Is this the clutch slipping?

If the revs are going up without the speed increasing then that’s a definite sign of a clutch issue. Similarly if you accelerate gently and it’s ok but it’s an issue with more acceleration.

Similarly if you gently go up to top gear and try to accelerate from low speed but the revs fly up without speed increasing again points to clutch slip.

And a final confirmation, when the revs have shot up if you pull over and pop the bonnet only to be greeted with a nasty horrible smell that’s yet another side effect of clutch slip.

Sounds like a very simple case of the clutch has worn out.

New clutch and you may as well change the clutch slave cylinder at the same time and your car should be fully back to normal.

Sitting at 40MPH in top gear, fully accelerate, if revs climb and car doesn't gain speed, clutch is done.  Not the end of the world to be fair.  If the rest of the car OK, get clutch done, decent garage, 6hrs labour.  My local indie did mine with an LuK kit (includes slave cylinder) for £430.  Dropped off in morning, he delivered it at 15:00 same day.  Better the devil you know and all that.
