Ecoboost wet belt problem - can the engine be saved ?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I am hoping that someone may be able to help me with this common problem that People are having with their ecoboost engines.

My Car is a 2014 1.0 ecoboost, mileage at 75k, always serviced.

I was on the Motorway when I got a low Oil pressure warning light come on that stated to pull over safely.

I pulled over after a few minutes and had a look how far to the nearest service which was just over a mile away and decided to take it there.

The Car was not making any noise when the Light first came on but then started to make a lot of rattling noise by the time I got to the services.

I now know that I should have pulled over straight away and had it recovered from the hard shoulder, lesson learned.

I was quoted £900 by a garage to replace the wet belt, clean the oil pump along with the pickup pipe etc.

My local Mechanic advised that I should get the Oil Pump and pickup Pipe cleaned first to see if the Engine would still be okay before spending so much only to find out that the Engine had gone which I had agreed to. He charged me £250 to remove the Sump, clean the Oil Pump and pickup pipe then added fresh Oil (5w 20).

The Mechanic had called me and told me the Car was now back to normal and running fine and to come back on Wednesday to have the Belt replaced, when I drove the Car home however after only a few minutes did my Car started to sound more like a diesel and it sounded like it was running rough with some knocking sounds 😞

I took it back to the Garage straight away and was told that the Engine had most likely gone, he told me to bring it back on Wednesday which is when their more fiesta experienced Mechanic will be there.

I drove it Home which is less than a mile and parked it up and not driven it since.

When I start it up does it sound okay and drives fine, it seems like there is a small lack of Power which I believe is due to the bad Belt.

After sometime however is there a knocking sound, it sounds like plastic hitting something.

I am hoping that the Engine is not damaged and if it is that it can be saved somehow by someone.

I hooked up my Forscan OBD tool which came up with the following coded:

PO58A - Battery Monitor Module 'A' Performance

PoA1F - Battery Energy Control Module 'A' Performance

P1794 - Battery Voltage Circuit

P0562 - System Voltage Low

P2122 - Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch 'D' Circuit Low

And also these two codes:

P000B - 'B' Camshaft Position Slow Response Bank 1

Additional Fault Symptom (:71):
 - Actuator Stuck

Status (-68):
 - Previously Set DTC - Not Present at Time of Request
 - Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC
 - Test not complete

Module: Powertrain Control Module

 Freeze Frame  #1:
-LOAD: 38.04 % - Calculated Load Value
-ECT: 84 °C - Engine coolant temperature
-RPM: 1780 1/min - Engine Revolutions Per Minute
-FUELSYS: Closed Loop  - Fuel System Status (Open/Closed Loop)

I had paid just under £4k for the Car a little over 2 years ago and have fallen in love with it and really don't want to part with it.

I would be really grateful if there's anyone who has had similar problems or someone who knows what the best course of action would be who can advise me on what I should do.

Thanks everyone

Sorry to say, but it sounds like the engine is gone.

Even if you do change the cam and oil pump belt the starvation will have destroyed the main shell bearings and the cam bearings, the turbo bearings and the vacuum pump.

Either cut your losses and dump and run, if there is no warning lights on, or buy a used, known running, engine and have the belts changed before you install

Unless it's late November or December registered the cars overdue for the scheduled belt change so no chance of support from Ford (below).

Otherwise, as Dave suggests or somewhere like:

Yes, you could try that, if you have a comprehensive service history

Thank you all for your help with this, I will most likely cut my losses and try to sell as is.

RIP little Fiesta and thank you for your service. You will be missed and remembered 💐♥️🙏🏽
