Focus Zetec S 2014 MK3 Rev counter sticking

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I do a guage sweep and reset everything and its ok for a while. Minutes sometimes and hour maybe.

Bus eventually 2000RPM will become zero, then maybe 3500 and so on. It just works its way round thinking that various positions are the 0 (Off position)

Guage sweep always fixes it for a shoirt while but what is happening and how can I fix it? It's really frustrating!!

Hope someone can shed some light on what is happening and how it may be fixed.

Thank you

Anyone with any ideas at all? 😞

@rd457 is probably your best bet for this one.

Hmmmmmmmm..mmmm...mmmmm, well, it could be that the needle is sometimes snagging on the gauge background, or that the motor is faulty and needs replacing (sometimes snagging internally), or it could be that sometimes power to the motor is dropping out for some reason, perhaps due to some grime on the board or a dodgy solder joint somewhere.

I have fixed a few odd cases before on older models, of partially stuttering movement (temporary loss of power on one side of the motor) by cleaning and sometimes also reflowing joints, or of complete loss of movement by same or replacing the motor, as necessary.

It won't be to do with sensor data, it's just intermittently failing to move it back to zero and has no way of knowing it, so next time all movement is relative to this position. It must be just a lucky fluke that a gauge sweep has always managed to move it back to actual zero.

Thank you for the great reply. Is there anything a relatively noob can do or should I take it to Ford or maybe an auto-electrician?

A regular mechanic is probably going to just insist on replacing the cluster with a new one at a cost of hundreds of pounds. An auto electrician maybe same.

You can pick up used clusters for sale on ebay relatively cheaply. Swapping to another could help prove whether or not the problem is with the cluster. However ideally they want programming to ensure the config matches your vehicle model, plus to set the mileage, and note that mileages can typically only be increased. Plus if you do any significant distance with the other cluster and want to switch back later the mileage would need adjusting.

Alternatively you could send it to me via my repair service (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314393033915), however the testing that I can do is very limited, and I've never actually had one of your model before. I could have a play with the gauge needles to see if there's an obvious problem, and I could clean the circuit board in case grime is to blame. If I can reproduce the problem and that hasn't solved it, I could reflow (re-melt) all joints on the entire board to see if that does the trick, but that's a lot of work, I've previously charged an extra £60 for it. Of course there's no certainty that any of this will achieve anything.

There are also various professional companies doing cluster repair who perhaps have experience with this model and could be in a better position than I am to deal with it.

I'd chuck a 2nd hand set of clocks in, but make sure you buy some that have less mileage than yours

Get yourself set up on FORScan, save your current cluster asbuilt data to your laptop then install that to your replacement cluster and then roll mileage forwards to your current cluster level

Mate, what a great reply but all sounds very confusing lol. Where would you get some new clocks from? Can you shout me how to do the lap toppy thing?

I have looked at FORScan but really not sure what I have to do. I am computer savvy so we are half way there lol

When you go into FORScan, with your original cluster still fitted, go into "configuration & programming (left icons)

At bottom of screen will say "save all" or "save asbuilt data to file" (can't remember)

Save it on your desktop, name it as yourregASbuiltIPC

Install new cluster

Go back into "configuration & programming (left icons)

At bottom of screen will say "load all" or "load asbuilt data from file" (can't remember)

click that

click "write all"

Then go into service mode (left icons)

IPC

Mileage adjust and change to old cluster level (exact number)

Mate, I'm gonna have a bash at this. Really helpful, thank you so much.

It's been really bugging me. You think this will fix the issue? Mind you they come with a warranty so if not I'll send it back 😉

You will probably need to upload your video to YouTube, then post a link on here.

I would be interested to see how you do this.

The accepted file types listed there are all picture or text files.  The forum can't upload video files.

🤣 I know, that's why I put that screenshot up, to show there was no 'error' just the forum doesn't accept raw video, just links...
