Oil filter wrench

Featured Replies

Going to tackle doing the oil change myself query is can anybody advise on the oil filter wrench that I need?
By that I mean the one that fits over the oil filter and you plug a socket wrench into the hole. Always used one of these on the motorbike with success.
Ones on line seem to be 76mm with 14 flats. Is this the boy?!

Hi There,

This is the one i use on ford fiesta filters 903-1 cap end wrench with square and spanner end.        This only fits filter which has diameter of 75mm from flat pad to pointy pad  because it has 15 flutes. (Ford Fiesta oil Filter 1883037 0r EM5G-6714-AA)Check your existing filter on car first for diameter and flute total, Ideally you only need oil filter wrench to undo filter then tighten with hands and again when filter warm not hot

From @Tizer's post (I have the same useful tool for vehicles other than 2011 S-MAX)

Not a cheeky hint but for info, the ebay links work with just the reference number i.e.:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/267013016910

AFAIK, the garbage come from how you got to the item via the site database (or something!)

I bought a quality 'claw' type about 30 years ago - like this, with the round legs with grip-points.  It's fitted every filter on every car, and in the most awkward places to reach - if you have a socket set with extensions etc etc

(I think mine is a Draper in black, but this is the type)

If you get one of those universal ones rather than one that fits flutes, then it'll fit all your future cars too.  The strap type might struggle if space around it is tight.

Thanks everybody. I have the strap type but being the world's worst mechanic i have never got on with it! I always serviced my motorbikes and looking at what gets done now by a garage for a service I think I can do all of that myself and "enjoy" the skinned knuckles, burned fingers and oil soaked overalls at the same time 😂

I use one of these and I have had the same one for over 40 years.

Yeah, I've had  a similar one for at least as long and never failed, but it's a good while since I used it now - access is more difficult on modern cars, and I'm getting a bit past crawling under cars nowadays. Mine actually started out with a bright orange strap but it's pretty black now!😀

Hi All, Haddocksrock just wanted to know cap end specs and as for links goes to specfic page or item,

Better for person to choose said item (gripper belt,3 prong, filter pliers, bike chain wrench and all the rest). Just did oil change today using  adjustable oil filter strap wrench metal band and that slips, So modified it with silicone rubber tube and still slips but not as much. So whatever works best,  Apologies for any misunderstanding just trying to be of Help.
