2007 smax 2.0 diesel. Electrical issues

Featured Replies

Could some help us. Our smax has started developing some electrical grimlins. Started with the instrument cluster lighting up like a christmas tree, intermittantly. The speedo has started to stop working intermittantly, and tonight, while my partner was driving home in the dark, the headlights went out for a few seconds then came back on. Could it be a loose wire somewhere?

Sounds like the infamous dry cracked solder joints on the back of the instrument cluster. Costs about £80 to get repaired.

Possibly @rd457 can offer some help and advice?

Your car is of the generation  if it was a 'Focus' it would be symptomatic of a very common instrument cluster fault and needs re-soldering. However, I'm not knowledgeable enough to advise if the S max was effected. Someone smart should be along soon...

Well, having it confirmed by 'someone smart', that your instrument cluster is of a similar type, this may be of interest. This guy is a forum member and has received excellent feedback both on his Ebay page as well as directly here...

So Tom, you got the help you requested, now don't be a stranger and let us know how you get on. If you need help removing the cluster post back here and we'll talk you through it. Really easy, just 2 x screws...

Cheers, i will

Yeah a 2007 probably has what I refer to as a type 3 in my listing, which is affected by the cracked solder joint problem. (Plus if it has the tall screen it can suffer from gauge movement issues).

Though I'm not certain that this could have anything to do with the headlights temporarily loosing power.

Sounds more like BCM water ingress to me
