If it's a Powershift, that sensor shown is on back of the dual clutch mechanism and is deep inside the gearbox requiring removal and dismantling.Unless you are certain its at fault, check everything else possible first?

Hi, I believe I have a similar fault, the code P0715-2F input shaft speed sensor ‘A’ circuit.  I’ve had a gearbox fluid and filter change, new battery and using the diagnostics checked latest software and retrained box shifting through gears.

the fault keeps coming back, so next is changing the sensor.  From what I have read this sounds like gearbox out and reconditioned with new sensors, or can any suggest anything different before I go down this route.

thanks

Should have mentioned my car is a 2012 smax automatic 2.0 tdci powershift, which I believe is the same as SteveStorms.

As stated above, I believe these are critical sensors and you seem to have done all the basics (that I would have done!)

If it's definitely not an external wiring fault - good auto electrician? (plug to car and ECU, corrosion, powers and grounds, load test all wires, earth straps) then...

I can only suggest finding a specialist in your area, mine is:

https://austrin-engineering.co.uk/services/

They offer a sensible warranty and I'd discuss options, i.e. how far to go depending on your wish about how long you want to keep it and what they suggest really needs replacing when you get down that far and what can be cleaned and tested.

I can only imagine at the minimum and increasing:

Change the two critical sensors.

Change internal filter

Clean inspect and flush everything removing metal from magnetic sensors.

Refurbish clutch assembly, new (ideally non plastic) separators, new plates.

Consider testing/replacing solenoids

Replace selector operating pistons

Check oil pump and gears/bearings.

I'd want a full discussion around all of this, their opinions, a firm price and comprehensive warranty.

We love the car and can't see anything else to replace it. Any change would be to an unknown quantity and would cost many, rather than several, thousands so even an expensive repair (providing nothing else on the horizon?) could give you back your vehicle?

Please let us know what happens as I may have the same decisions to make, but hopefully not.

Good morning @Shearers and @DynaDeer , Curious to know how things panned out for both of you on this. My Wife's 2011 2.0 titanium with a Powershift gearbox has been doing some erratic changes and and occasionally hitting neutral. This has been going on for years but recently she got an error on the dash and the car went into limp mode. I read the error and it is as follows.

===TCM DTC P0715:2F-68===
Code: P0715 - Input/Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor 'A' Circuit

Additional Fault Symptom (:2F):
 - Signal Erratic

So here I find myself on your thread. We've had the car for 10 years plus, it doesn't owe us anything and we love the car and always said we'd keep it until it's no longer viable.

I also do get a low battery if the car is engine-off-ignition-on for even a few minutes, but the car has never hesitated to start as long as we don't leave the ignition on to listen to the radio!

Looks like my first steps are to check the external wiring and it definitely is due for a gear oil change, and then the battery thing might be somehow related I guess if there is an electrical problem.

But it sounds like the sensors are not something for a home job and potentially quite an expensive job at a shop. I'm in Surrey so I will want to find somewhere local to me if it comes to that.

So early days for me but I don't want my wife getting stuck so I will need to make some decisions.

My heart sank when you said "due an oil and filter change" likely meaning overdue!

That would be my second priority, including tearing the filter apart.

First priority is to fully charge battery and replace if any doubt (there's always doubt!)

I believe that sensor is absolutely vital and is right in the bowels i.e. on the flywheel area impossible to get at without major work.

So agree, all external wiring, oil and filter (see West way Lubricants on eBay), battery, need checking first.

Thanks @Shearers sound like a sensible approach!

Just for anyone reading this and for info, I got a quote from a local garage to change the gear oil. They quoted 1 hour labour but the total quote came to £538 with vat - mainly because they quoted on Ford OEM oil (7,2l) and parts. They were a bit shocked themselves at the prices they were having to quote but they were not keen to compromise on buying Ford original.

Second quote from a gear specialist was £295 for the oil change and around £1500 for the sensor change. The gear specialist did say that sometimes the sensor gets gunked up by clutch residue so that can be a sign of further issues, and that a clutch replacement is more like £3500 + (I think these prices were +vat)

As said, I've used the Westway oil and filter (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112436788478) after the first heart attack of, I think £600 Ford job at the end of the warranty (other kits around that price are available)
It still drives like new.
Maybe a change (have you done it before?) to the proper procedure will flush out  or move any residue - also keep a sample of the oil to look at.
I have photos of filter and oil for comparison - filter element should be coated with light grey residue, no particles.
If clutch or sensor replacement needed, best to get a full check and replace internal filter and any other worn parts whilst it's in bits?
@GregH101, assume, like us, you are keeping it for the long term - there's nothing comparable out there?

I haven't done the job myself before but we had it done by a Ford dealer in the early days. Can't remember at what mileage we had it done but suffice to say it's overdue by a smidge. ☹️ Oh well, maybe we will get away with it. In the youtube video I watched, the filter was so gunked up that the guy recommended the owner drive it for a bit and then do a second oil change.

I was going to take it in for the oil change initially but having struggled all morning to get through to the place I called yesterday so I decided I'll just do it myself. The gear place is 12 miles from me and I have a spares place round the corner which has the goods. They sell Granville DCT fluid in 5l. I prefer giving them my business because they are handy to have around 🙂

If I have to get the sensor done after this and it's circa 2K then I will stretch to that, but if it goes any further then I think it's tickets for this car, as much as I love it.

Really hoping that the oil change gives us a few more years of use. Even if we have to put up with some erratic gear changes every now and then. I will take some photos etc for diagnosis purposes as suggested.

Just found the receipt in the glovebox. Ford did a gear oil change in 2017 at 43K, the car is now at 95K

Did the gear oil change over the weekend and the oil was dirty for sure- a dark brown colour-  but no obvious particles in the oil or filter. After a 10 mile test drive the car is showing a marked improvement in the automatic shifting. Haven't yet seen the sensor error again but it's probably too early to make any assumptions about that.
