Buying a new TV - online experience...

Featured Replies

Need to replace a simple 32inch TV as current one now developed a 'colour' fault. Now, the thing you use most on any TV is the remote control. On searching many different web sites, they all show useless photos of the TV, which to all intents and purposes is exactly the same as all TVs, a big rectangular black box from different angles. However, I wanted to see the actual remote control to see how well designed it was. Finally, I found Argos, which actually shows a photo of the remote control.

(Kinda like choosing a car without seeing what the dashboard looks like.)

I'm getting it from Argos for that very reason.

What make are you getting?

Which brand did you choose?

I've just had to buy another aftermarket remote for my TV as they stopped selling the originals a while ago.  Think I'm on number 5 now.

Will need to buy another TV eventually so good to know which remotes are still functional nowadays.

@TomsFocus did they make black and white TVs with remotes? 😳🤔😃

Selecting LG, have another one 14 years old, works 100%, so my own recommendation 😂

Most low and middle range TVs (such as my new Panasonic 40 inch Android TV) are nowadays manufactured for the big brands by a huge company called Vestel. Only the top end TVs tend to be actually manufactured by the brand name they are sold under.

Update on Argos experience - it sucks 😂

Ordered TV online today. Even ticked the option to open an account (email confirmed immediately), and to link my Nectar card (text confirmation).

However, I waited for my confirmation order email, and waited, and waited. I knew something had gone wrong. The amount had come out of my PayPal account (albeit 'pending')

On contacting Argos via 'chat', and eventually defeating their useless AI bot, I was told there had been a 'glitch' on the transaction which they were unable to correct. However, the good news is I would get a refund within the next 7 days. What? It took them 30 seconds to suck the amount out of my account.

I am not happy!!

Once I get the refund, I will walk into a proper shop, buy a TV, and take it to my car...

What's a proper shop these days....Richer Sounds?

Are they still going ? used to buy quite a bit from them when I used to work in London.

Euronics?

Back to the TV choice, the remote is important, but the menu system and TV Guide need to be clear too.  Our Panasonic TV is a good all round performer for video/audio, but the menu system is not intuitive, and the font for the TV guide is too small.  We have a Panasonic DVR and the guide on that is much more readable.

We generally use John Lewis for such items.

Forgot to update this post LOL After 2 days (!) I finally got a confirmation order email from Argos. Now I wasn't sure if I was getting a refund, or TV (which I wanted). Anyway, after another few days, I soon received a text, confirming the TV was ready for collection complete with order number.

Went down, and collected my new LG TV. Must admit, I'm chuffed to bits with it, great picture, and loads of functionality that will never be used!

It wasn't the smoothest of transactions, but all went well in the end.
