Transmission Limited Function - Ford S-Max Powershift (2014)

Featured Replies

And there's this Part 1 and 2 (not Powershift but the aim's the same?):

Sorry OP but your gearbox rebuild has failed. Had exactly the same problem with the powershite in my galaxy, so i bit the bullet and had a manual conversion (chap in Tadcaster does them). Havent ahd a problem since.

If I recall correctly, this job should still be under some sort of warranty and with all due respect, whilst you had that disaster it may not be the same issue.

AND, @Nedski may well be ready to give up as nothing else other than charging the battery has been done (I think I'd be pretty sick too but there is no complete diagnostic or simple checks done to date?)
The knowledge that manual conversions are possible is very useful (what are the contact details for that?)

Chap is called Marcin Wojdyla and lives in Tadcaster

I've spent the last few weeks pretending this wasn't happening as I mentally couldn't face dealing with it. I've been trying to find a local mechanic/electrician to have a look at the potential electrical issues but it's proving hard to find anyone with the expertise. The powershift really is universally hated!

Anyway, the night it failed (again) after I had charged the battery essentially went like this:

I drove it a few miles with no issues, going through the gears etc. I pulled over for a bit with the engine running, and as I pulled away the message came up on the dashboard and left me stuck in 1st. After turning the engine off and trying again, it kept happening. I then tried accelerating quickly to skip through the gears and I was actually able to drive it home, and everything felt relatively normal. I tried to avoid dropping in to 1st in case that was the problem.

Following this, I've checked over the accessible earth's (not the wheel arch one, that's above my paygrade). I did another scan which gave the following results which included a few extras this time:

Does this offer any indication as to what else it might me? I need this fixed one way or another, and if it turns out the gearbox is truly buggered I'll be going through small claims court to get ASR Gearbox Repairs to sort it out.

If anyone knows of a reputable specialist in the Southampton area please please let me know!

Thanks in advance.

Main thing I notice is that there appear to be several old codes (Dec & Jan?) so initially I'd clear all the codes that exist (you have a record of them) and try again.
There appear to be 2 related to transmission: a general one and the intermediate shaft speed sensor which will obviously, if solid, cause major issues as the gearbox won't know what is going on.

There are still a couple of voltage issues which may be Red Herrings or not?
What do the rebuilders say?:

https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/buying-or-repairing-a-car/problems-with-a-car-repair/

That gearbox is knackered

If this(these) problems definitely can't be resolved by rebuilders - will need evidence of warranty and a diary of actions/evidence plus likely a report from another specialist (joke) to start to build a case for a Small (under £10k) Claim.

The risk is that the company come back with their rebuttal needing a judge to make a decision so IMHO, better to continue a dialogue with them until they stop responding or refuse to settle.

Then use CA Small Claim advice and perhaps consult one of their specialists to get a strong case together.

As said, the only other alternative is to continue to try to diagnose the real hard faults (current faults described are different to original faults?) and be certain that it is not battery or external wiring related (auto electrician to check all powers/grounds and communication between transmission and PCM - someone who has access to wiring diagrams?)

I'll probably have to give up now as my suggestions are exhausted and may be impossible to carry out if there are no local  "professionals" that deserve that moniker, sorry!

Thanks again, I really do appreciate the help and advice!

I still cannot find a local auto electrician willing to help so I'm still in limbo with this POS car!

I thought I'd try deleting the codes and see what comes back but now I have a new problem! The car won't respond to the fobs. It did last time, now it doesn't. I changed the key battery, no luck. I got in with the key blade but the alarm was constantly going off so I locked it back up as it was late and didn't want to disturb the neighbours. I can't find a clear reason for this, could this be battery related? It's been sat for a while but was fully charged before this. I can test the battery but I'll wait until it's a more convenient time for the neighbours.

Assuming it's keyless, if you put the key fob in the emergency position that should stop the alarm.  (You may need to switch the ignition on.)

The 12v battery charge probably is low as it's parked up for several weeks.

I've taken the car to Autotech in Southampton.

They called today, and they reckon the speed sensor needs replacing. In order to do this the box needs to come out and they are quoting £2k. They also reckon there's gonna be more problems, probably including the mechatronic unit, and is estimating another couple of grand on top. So another £4k+.

At this point I don't know what to do or who to believe, I just know it's not worth paying £4k again, not that I can even afford it. I want this car gone.

I can understand the frustration, sorry to hear that and understand the "get rid" decision.

Only other option would be to consider a Small Claim (as above) especially if  you have evidence of work done/warranty/quality of original rebuilder and the report from Autotech?

https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/buying-or-repairing-a-car/problems-with-a-car-repair/

And:

https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/legal-system/small-claims/deciding-whether-to-make-a-small-claim/

And/or, contact CA Consumer with history and evidence for advice before you make your final choice, sorry again, that's all I can suggest.
