2004 focus cluster display flickering when car's off (Video)

Featured Replies

Hello,

First time poster, tried searching for this specific issue but didn't find anything exact.

The issue I'm having is on the instrument cluser display flickers randomly and erratically when the car is off.

I tried diagnosing the issue with a multimeter but couldn't uncover anything obviously wrong with the fusing or continuity from fuse 36.

Any ideas or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like the infamous dry solder joints on the instrument cluster. Very common for your model and year.

I see you are in Ireland, @StephenFord in NI knows a company who can fix them quickly.

I saw the post but wasn't sure the issue applied to a 2004 cluster.

Very common to us seasoned Focus-ites, Just in case, the 'cluster fault' is because Ford used lead free solder to save some dolphins back in the day. All was well until the passage of time saw the solder deteriorate causing numerous random electrical faults in the car, especially as so much in the Mk2 uses the cluster as a central control unit.

Good news is that it being so common, a whole industry has sprung up doing a full re-soldering repair, usually at £60 to £90, so not overly expensive.

I had mine repaired a couple of years back by a place in Dungannon, Derek Hobson.

They did a same day repair for me so car was 'off road' for minimal time, and the repair sorted out numerous electrical gremlins and works perfectly to this day.

If you need further advice on how to remove cluster (only 2 x screws) or anythijng else, post back here...

Originally yeah but currently working and living in the Netherlands. Perhaps there might be someone here who also can repair that. Thanks for looking out!
