Timing/wet belt

Featured Replies

Is it worth getting the timing and wet belt changed in my 09 Ford focus? I was quoted €1,500 from a Ford garage, so I’ve been shopping around but I have a feeling il be lucky to get it below the €1000 mark. Any feedback appreciated 👍

Petrol, Diesel, Pixie dust ?

A bit more information needed. Mileage, engine size, has it been changed before.

Is this a 2009 Ecoboost 1.0 ????? 🤔

1.8 diesel, currently 238,000 miles and the last time I no of it being changed was back in 2015 at 106,000 😬

Then the answer is yes it needs done like yesterday.

The price seems very high for a 1.8 diesel Focus.

The location would suggest hourly rates being higher than normal. The Celtic tiger has long gone 😁

I no I feel like I’m driving a ticking time bomb atm. I kind of expected Ford to charge me a stupid price but not that bad. I’ve gotten in contact with a few mechanics to see if they could do it for cheaper but still waiting on prices. What do you think the price should be roughly?

I know very little about your engine type, so mine would be a pure guess of around £800 at a non-Ford garage.

Perhaps @TomsFocus would be able to offer a better idea (he'll be back on the forum tomorrow).

Ok, thanks for the feedback 👍

Genuine parts cost for: dry cambelt kit, wetbelt casette, aux belt, waterpump, coolant & oil come to around £700.

I don't know the exact labour hours but I'd estimate around 4 hours at a Ford dealership.  So that's roughly another £700 making £1400 all in.

Which means €1500 is about right for genuine parts at a Ford dealership.  Perhaps the labour rates over there are a bit lower than ours.

Aftermarket parts would come to around £400.  And I'd expect an independent garage to take a bit longer, so maybe 6 hours.  That comes to around £1150, which works out at just under €1400.

I can't see it being worthwhile in all honesty.  How much longer are you expecting a 238k engine to last?

Right ok, well now I really don’t no what to do. I always thought it being 1.8 diesel that maybe if I got the work done I could get another 2 or 3 years out of it. Do you think it won’t go much longer with that mileage? Thanks.

I don't think €1500 is worth spending for 2-3 years more use.  But that's only my opinion.

Really depends on what other work has recently been done but I'd expect it to need injectors, clutch, DMF, welding, suspension, brakes etc over the next 3 years as well.

And that's all money wasted effectively.  Won't get it back if you sell.  And if the car gets crashed the insurance will only cover the book value, which will virtually nothing at that mileage.

The most effective solution is just to keep running it until the belt breaks then scrap it.  That'll save you potentially thousands of Euros.  But I also appreciate some people need reliability and can't risk it.

I’m after getting a quote from a local mechanic that can do the belts and full service for €900. But as you said my fear is if I got this work done and something else goes wrong.

But on the other hand if so spend 3-4k on something else and that goes wrong il be out of packet completely. So I think I’m rolling the dice in whatever I do.

I got injectors last year and wielding on the underneath rear door on driver side, bearing done on passenger side and new starter put in.
